I am an XP Pro home user and only my DSL connection is shared, being fed via a Router/Firewall that is shared with other family members. Until yesterday sometime, the only related icon in my SysTray was the Local Connection (for the NIC card). Local Connection 2 was for the nVidia Networking and was disabled with no icon showing, and there was no "Internet Connection ".

Now, I have an "internet connection" icon, a Local Connection icon and a Local Connection 2 icon (with the disabled X on it). I cannot get the latter icon LC-2) to go away though the icon checkboxes in Network Connections are not checked. The Local Connection in Network Connection has been emasculated and just shows an activity window. The new Internet Connection says that "this connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection or another computer ". The Settings sub-window shows a ton of connections like AIM (my son), Lime and msmgs.

The net is working but something is amiss. I just can't figure out what. Thanks for any assistance. Lar

You somehow have ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) enabled. Rerun the Network setup wizard and don't use "other computers will connect to Internet through this comp" or similar wording.

The Network Setup Wizard (couldn't find a Network Sharing Wizard) would not let me alter the sharing aspect, it would only add to it. Should I just delete the Internet Connection (and Local Connection - NIC card) in Network Connections and start over?

    Sounds confusing.
Windows XP and its predecessor 2000 has a strange quirk.
Each time you install another network card - wireless or non wireless it adds a new numbered connection.
The problem is that windows networking is confused .
Best to either delete the tcips and let it reinstall properly.
Or delete the non working earlier ones and rename the one you are using as the number one connection.
If you uninstall the tcip for that connection it should reinstall (hopefully properly) on reboot.
