    Hello All,

I have lost my local area connection (broadband/external modem) on my primary computer. Last night I disconnected my primary computer and connected a secondary computer which I had just received. The connection worked fine on the secondary computer, but when I reconnected my primary, no local area connection is made. It attempts to renew my internet address, but it fails. Is it possible that when I connected the secondary computer to the same modem that is used for my primary something was affected? By the way, I have connected both computers (1 at a time) to all the same hardware (monitor, mouse, keyboard, modem) several times today and each time the local area connection works fine on the secondary machine, but still won't connect on the primary machine. Obviously, I am making this post with my secondary machine! I have checked all the network settings on the primary machine, and nothing jumps out at me, but my experience is somewhat limited regarding what the settings should be. Besides, nothing should have changed just due to a simple disconnect and reconnect.

    Thanks for all consideration!!

You can turn off the modem for about 5 minutes or even longer, say 10 minutes around. Then try again.

The possible reason is your ISP only gave you one IP address and the modem has "remembered" your secondary computer's MAC address in cache. Generally, after about 5 minutes you turn off the modem, the modem will release the MAC address in its cache.
