first of all hey all and thanks for any help i might get.
So my problem is the following : Yesterday evening my connection just died. That isnt anything unusual and normally i just reset the router and the modem and things start to work again but it didnt yesterday. My router is a Trendnet TEW-311BRP and it's a wireless LAN with 4 other comps besides mine connected.
I'm pretty sure that the problem is related to the router since, if i just connect my comp via a network cable directly to the modem, the connection works perfectly but if i connect with a cable or wireless to the router it just doesnt.

The status window for my connection tells me that something like 8000 packages have been sent(ofc the number increases the whole time) but only a very low amount of packages have been received. Also none of the standart gateway and ip's don't work (Gateway 192.168.1.1 and Ips in the range from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.8). Also what i think is very weird that sometimes one computer randomly gets acces to another Gateway (192.168.0.1) and then the connection works only for that pc.

Yesterday before it crashed i messed around abit with the ip's in the router menu because we were expieriencing frequent IP conflicts..so i maybe have done some mistakes and blocked the router or something?!

    Help Appreciated
    Charlie

EDIT: My system is Windows XP Home

Does yhe user guide for your router mention anything about a factory/master reset where all config info is reset back to factory default?

The Guide of that rotuer model on the Net told that, yeah. I've already tried it though and it still doesn't change anything.

Have you tried connecting only one computer to your router by itself (i.e., router is not connected to modem or anything else) and try to access the router admin page?

If you can't, then maybe it is time to RMA the router.

You tried entering the roter's address in the address bar (e.g., 192.168.0.1) and you get the message "Could not connect to the site "? You should have gotten the router admin log-in page.

RMA means Return Merchandise Authorization. This allows you to return the router to he manufacturer for repair/exchange.

Really? The 192.168.1.1 is an internal IP address. You should have no trouble accessing it even the router is not connected to your modem.

If that is the case, I suspect your router is defective.

Hi, eltektech I am sorry to hijack this Post, but it reflects my problems very much. I have sent my Router back for a checkup as I could not detect it by entering it into my Browser address bar it came up with the same answer "Could not connect to the siteâ€. I use 3 PC’s on cable Broadband and I can connect each PC individually to the Modem and the Internet connection works just fine. But when connecting the Modem to the Router not one of the PC’s would connect.
I was told that maybe I would have to manually set a IP address but I have no idea on how to do that.
I assume that I will get a Router back next week (new or old) and hope to be able to draw on your experience.

I probably instal 10 to 15 routers a month and they have an insane failure rate.
I bought one from Bestbuy, installed it and it worked fine for a week. Went back to Bestbuy and bought the same model router to replace the bad one (and have the packaging to return the previous one) and it had the exact same problem. An intermentent WAN port.

Hi Scott, this does not sound very promising at all for me, I had thought that Routers where a fairly reliable piece of Hardware.
My plans are really nothing much all I want to do is have my 3 PC's at home connected to the Internet at the same time instead of just one and then having to pull the cable from the Modem and connecting it to the other.
By the way can one change Ethernet cables on the Modem while the PC's and the Modem are on ?? So far I have always turned the PC's off before I change over. I am using a Belkin 4 Port KVM Switch and a old USB Printer Server 4Port.
All I need is the Internet now I have Cable Broadband.
    Any good ideas.

If you are installing 10-15 routers per month and have that high of a failure rate, I would have to say that you are doing something seriously wrong! It is true that what most of us consider a router is of the consumer grade. What do you expect for $50!! BUT, I wouldn't say that they have an insane failure rate if installed properly.

Hawk, before you buy one, read some reviews on different models. Not magazine reviews, but customer reviews. Look at shopper.cnet.com and newegg.com and read what end users are saying. Most of these things are going to work just fine. I, personally, have had a lot of problems with Linksys. They seem to need a power cycle too regularly for me! DLink has always had a decent product for me, but their wireless range is a little weak. Netgear seems to have decent wireless range, but thier GUI doesn't have a lot of granularity.

If you're just looking for something to play with at the house, look at the DLink DI-634M. Good range, decent price. GUI is O.K. First thing you do with a router you get is throw the cool install CD that comes with it in the trash! Find out what the default username/password is from the lit in the package and use it to connect to whatever your PC says is your gateway.

As far as connecting things at different times, if you are ever going to disconnect the router from the modem, it would be best to power down the modem AND the router. Plug the modem back in, wait for it to come "online ", THEN plug your router back in. It will get the IP info from the ISP and pass it to the PCs when they renew.

Hi mjg1973, sorry to say but I already have one a TP-Link TL "“ R460, that I had taken back to the shop, and it appears that I will get the same back. It is not wireless.
Sorry if I did not explain myself properly but what I was asking for advice regarding the unplugging of the Ethernet cable was At the moment I have no Router but I have 3 PC’s and they are all within 1meter of each other. PC 1, 2, and 3 and they are connected to a KVM Switch (1monitor one keyboard one mouse) say PC1 at the moment is connected to the Internet via Ethernet cable directly into the Modem, I now want to use the Internet on PC2 can I pull the Ethernet cable out of the Modem and plug in the cable from PC2 without turning powering the PC’s off.

Yes. You should be able to do that withouth power off the PC. BUT, you may have to power cycle the modem each time you swap...much quicker than the PC, though!

Yep they have been Linksys. I wasn't going to drag them through the mud though.
I have had three fail in the last 2 months. That's an insane amount to me because you assume a product won't be broken out of the box. So, you spend lots of unnecessary time double checking yourself for mistakes when it turns out the problem was the router.

All three were WRT54G and are still riding around in my truck.

All three will drop the WAN IP or if left on even longer will go into hard lock shutting the LAN down.

Haven't had a chance to check firmware versions so I don't know the answer to that question before it comes.
