    Hello All..
I just bought an Emachines notebook from Tiger Direct:mad: I had several issues getting it to work, and I live on dial up internet and it worked on that.
Now I am on a LAN network on an offshore consutruction project, and I am unable to get it to recognize the internet on the LAN, I can get it to recognize the LAN, but not the net. Mine is the only notebook of many that it will not work on, and many of the people here have offered assistance, to no avail.
    It is XP home edition.
It has a VIA Rhine II network card.

I get the "cannot find server" error when I try to open internet explorer. I am unsure if this is a software or a hard ware issue. My trouble shooter says that my network card is working fine.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello lost at sea,

The first thing is to check if you can connect to LAN - check if you can see other computers or not. Also check if you have any firewall installed. If you can tell your subnet, gateway, DNS settings etc, I can help you to troubleshoot.

It sounds like your trying to surf the net on a corporate LAN with your personal Laptop. My first thought would be there is a corporate policy in place to prevent you from doing so.

Probably the first step would be to click start / run / and type cmd and hit enter.

At the cmd prompt type ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt

Then go to the C drive, open the text document ipconfig.txt and post here.

My guess is one of the following:
    Proxi Server in place
    DHCP restrictions
No gateway in the DHCP scope
The ipconfig.txt could shed some light on this issue.

Do this - go to a fellow workers computer and run this command:
    (click on) Start, Run
    (type in ) cmd
    (Click on) OK
    (type in) ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt
    (type in) notepad c:\ipconfig.txt
    now print the results.

    Note his/her IP address.
(in the same window you ran the 'ipconfig' comnmand) Try 'pinging' other IP addresses to find an unused one with this command:
    ping xxx.xxx.xxx.###

Keep changing the '###' part until you get a "reply timed out ", but DO NOT change the 'xxx" parts.
(You might want to get a couple of free numbers just in case...)

    Go to your computer.
(Click on) Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Settings (or Network Connections)
    (Right-click on) your network adapter
    (Click on) Properties
    (Double-click on) Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
(Click on) Use the following IP address
Use the following DNS server address
Type in the IP address number you have from above and the same Mask, Gateway and DNS from the print-out.
    (Click on) Ok, Ok (again)
You have to reboot if you get a message stating you that do.

    Badda-bing, badda-boom.

Next step if you value your computer's longevity:
Google search the following words as-is:
internet explorer "use another browser "
Read (and note that the 1st result is from CERT - does computer research for US Homeland Security...)

    Alternate browsers:
    http://www.mozilla.org
    http://www.opera.org
