access denied on home network computer

I have a small 2-computer network with DSL through a Dlink 604 router and have file and printer sharing enabled. My network had been working fine for 6 months until this week. Computer 1 and 2 both show both computers on the Entire Network/ms window network/ network name folder. Computer 1 can see folders and files on computer 2, but computer 2 gets a message saying 'there ..may not be permission,... contact network administrator, ..access denied' when I try to view the shared drives on computer 1. I have tried turning off the xp firewall, enabling guest account, and turning off Norton AV, on computer 1 but still can't get through. Can anybody give me any other ideas on how to rectify this problem? Thanks in advance for any help given.

Within the last week what has changed that had not since you have gotten this error. Also, it may not be a guest account but the account you are logging on from make sure that both pcs have similar accounts and or passwords so that you may access the pcs properly. Also, check that both firewalls are down. If one firewall is up and or both are they will not allow the possiblity to access on another. If that still is not it try looking at the IPCONFIG /all in command prompt there may have accidentally been changes made without your knowledge of it occuring.

 

Thanks for the reply, TimatHGN. I hadn't really tried to access computer 1 from computer 2 for probably a couple months so it could be a number of things that changed. I did a norton AV resubscribe, and installed several programs. I also recently remove a large number of syware files with Adaware. It worked I know when I replaced my router with the Dlink about 3 months ago. I have xp home edition SP2 on both compuers and they logon without passwords. That hasn't been changed since I first set up the computers.

Both windows firewalls are disabled. I suspect the problem could be a faulty registry entry or something to do with the router setup, but I don't know much beyond the standard procedures to get the network setup. Any Ideas?

I also have the same problem--BUT IT IS NOT A NETWORKING PROBLEM!!

The reason I say that is because the computers "see" each other and are communicating. I added a new printer and hard drive to one computer and shared them and they show up on the other computer without me doing anything on that computer. So obviously the network is working just fine until you try to open any of the shares and get this message:

What reading I did in the Microsoft Knowledge Base all dealt with NT4 and not XP and referred to this or that service and involved editing the registry as part of the solution. Before I start trial and error experimentation with the different mentioned services and registry editing I thought it best to post it the problem in the various help forums and see if there might be a better solution.

AGAIN, the the network is working fine in every way but the symptom of the problem is denied network access. Some service or program is interferring with or denying access to the network shares.

 

You are correct hogcaller! It's not a networking problem per se. I have corrected the problem after consulting this link: http://www.techbuilder.org/recipes/59200376

I ran the guestuser routine suggested in the article, but I don't think that was the fix. What did the trick was changing the value in the registry for the RESTRICTANONYMOUS entry from 1 to 0.

One thing I should note. My error message was the same as yours EXCEPT for the last line. Mine said "access is denied ", not the thing about server storage. There is another registry entry mentioned in the techbuilder link that sounds like it may be related to your problem.
