If I were to set up a fiber backbone between 3 buildings housing about 30 users each, connected by cat5 and a 48 port switch in each building, if the switches had fiber ports, could I run the fiber from each building to a central repeater without needing any more equipment than the switch, in each building ( no converters, bridges, etc.)

Distance? 2Km per fiber run is about the maximum.

Otherwise, if the switches will take fiber, you should be pretty well good to go.

    Pretty good summary Here.
