My computer not in My Workgroup...

I have a small home network. 2 computers connected by a linksys 4 port router (hardwired). Computer 1 (my computer) runs 2kpro. It is part of the HOME workgroup and is identified that way. My router has DHCP enabled so my Netbios, addressing, etc is all controlled by that. I can ping myself, Computer 2 (runs XPpro) and the router from both computers. We are both using Client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP and are in the same workgroup. Computer 2: look into Network Neighborhood you see computer 2 and the shared folders and printer (file and printer sharing is enabled). Computer 1: look into Network Neigborhood and you don't see me. If I run a search for my computer (ewvann2kpro) it finds it in the HOME workgroup! So I click on ewvann2kpro and it shows my shared folders one of which is my downloads (same protocols, clients and file/printer sharing on both computers) and I get this error "\\ewvann\downloads is not accessible. Network path is not found. How do I correct this problem. What could go wrong with a path? If I click on the folder from my desktop~no problem. I think the problem is with my computer and my network is set up correctly, only I don't know how to fix a path problem... I would appreciate any help you could give me! Sorry for so long a post! Hi Elizabeth and welcome to the forum.

In order for 2K & XP (or 2K & 2K or XP & XP) to properly share resources over the network, several things need to happen in addition to the ones you mentioned.

1. They need to be in the same subnet (your Linksys probably took care of that).

2. Both PCs need to have the user logging on with a username and a NON-BLANK password.

3. Both PCs need to know about the account being used on the other PC. The main ways this can be done on a workgroup network are:
- use the same username/password to log on to both PCs
- use different logons and enable the Guest account on both PCs
- use different logons and have all that you use entered into the local users section of both PCs.

Thanks, Newt! I have covered everything except number 3. I have enabled the guest account on this computer and will enable it on the other one as well. I guess the weird thing to me is, why doesn't my computer show up in my own workgroup? I go to network neighborhood, show entire network,see "HOME" workgroup, click on that and I am not in there. I have never seen this problem before! I go to the network identification tab and it says "ewvann2kpro" and workgroup is HOME. Why would I not show up in my own workgroup? Why would the network path to my own computer be "not found "? That just boggles my mind.... Will appreciate any illumination on this one. Still not in my workgroup....

when I search for my computer (w2kpro) I am found in the Home workgroup. When I open network places>entire network>windows network>HOME- 0 objects listed. How can I be there and not be there at the same time. You can see what I have done from prior posts. I believe there is something wrong with this computer. The other computer on the network shows itself in the home network and shows its shared files and folders. He can't see me, but then, I can't see me either! I have even reinstalled windows at this point to see if that would work. Does anyone have any idea what could prevent me from showing up in the workgroup I am assigned to? I cannot think of anything else to do and at this point I cannot print because it is a network printer. Would appreciate any and all help I can get. Did follow all instructions to the letter so far. Thanks!

 

YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!! I am so excited! I got it to work, let me tell you what was wrong. First, I suspected that it may have to do with necessary protocols which may be missing but needed for my particular router. I went to the Linksys website and checked the knowledge base. Apparently 2kpro must have *Client for Microsoft Networks
*File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
*Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
*NetBEUI
*IPx/SPx
with that enabled and the necessary same protocols on the XPpro machine (we had both had the first three enabled but not the last two) I went ahead and reset the names of the computers so that no confusion would arise and it would basically reset the names. I then rebooted and EUREKA! THERE WE WERE! So apparently, some routers have specific protocols you wouldn't think were necessary, but that is just the way it goes. I had tried a workaround by enabling Netbios over TCP/IP, but it was not sufficient to resolve the problem. I had already renamed everything before and that did not solve it either. So, I can print!!!! I guess it is safe to say that if you try everything you normally would, check your routers specs. Maybe something weird is needed you wouldn't think was. Happy in Louisiana!!!!

I had this problem and someone suggested installing Net BUII on both computers, and then I was able to map to the other computer, etc.
