Is there such a thing as a generic driver to get a standard 10/100 network card going to access a broadband cable modem (I know it is not technically a modem) ?

Not really. You need the specific drivers for the NIC you have.

Is there a problem with that? Almost any (and all recent ones) should be available for download. And if you have one with no available drivers, a new low-end (but fine for broadband or small LAN) NIC can be gotten for around $6-7 US.
