I have what is probably a very simple issue but it alludes entirely.

I have a cable internet wire going to my computer coming from a switch at the modem and it has worked well. I wanted to add an access point by my computer so I added a switch to gain ethernet access. In this configuration, I cannot get the internet on my computer anymore. However, if I use a coupler and return my computer to a dedicated line, all is fine except, of course, that the access point has not signal. BTW, the access point is a bridged Linksys E2000 router. The switch does not transmit to my computer even if the input and my wire are the only ones on it. I tried a second switch with the same results.

I should add that the modem is a router, too, and I have two wires connected to the modem... the main wire to the switch and my dedicated wire. All others come off the switch.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

    Thanks for any input. Lar

    Hi Neil,

Thanks for the info on the bridging of the E2000. I will ck that out but right now it is not even connected. My immediate issue is the switch issue. Since I am coming directly off the cable modem/router to the switch, my thoughts are directed to that the cable modem as the culprit.

Since my first post was a little cryptic (upon a re-read)....

The dedicated line from the cable modem to my computer was fine until I decided I wanted to install the bridged E2000 on the same wire. To do so I added a switch to split the feed between my computer and the E2000. When I do that, I get very little, if any, output to either device. Removing the E2000 from the switch provides no benefit. Oddly, with everything connected to the switch, if I unplug the power to the switch and plug it back in, my computer gets connectivity for about 5 seconds and then it is gone. Weird. Same behavior with two differently branded switches.

Is there some kind of setting on the cable modem that inhibits compatability with the switches? Is there a trick to switches? One is an older Linksys EZXS55W with an uplink plug and the other is a newer Netgear GS605 that has Auto Uplink.

    Thanks, Larry

Good morning, Neil! Those were great resources (that I will keep handy) but I could not find the fix for my issue there. However, I did find out that there was a setting that was necessary on the Arris cable modem. I had to set the "start DCHP IP Address" at "x.100" instead of the default "x.1 ". That fixed the switch operation. Some kind of conflict I gather? Anyway, it is working now!

Quick question. I have the E2000 bridged as a AP and is working fine. My typical download speed is about 100mps but my cellphone says that the wifi signal is at 44mps. Is a 60% loss typical?

Great to see you got it fixed. My cellphone shows WiFi is Very Strong = 72Mbps.
Speed Test currently shows Download @ 31.62Mbps and Upload @ 9.35Mbps with Fibre-Optic connection. That's slightly better than the plan I'm paying for! Neil.
