I have been working on various Windows 7 laptops of late, and each one that has *no* set password cannot be accessed via my LAN. My desktop machine *does* have a password, and I can access said machine via any other computer on the LAN as long as I enter the correct credentials, but from the desktop computer, I cannot access another Windows 7 machine unless that machine has a set password.

Does each Windows 7 computer require a network password?

No but each machine requires a USER with a password.

Windows machines must have a username/password before networking will work. (Even a password of simply "1" [without the quotes] will work. It's not advisable, but, it will work).

    Thanks, Doc!

I prefer a secure password to be set on all machines, but I reboot so much after recovery operations, a password can be a nuisance at times.

No, but I've read that Homegroups are more troublesome and restrictive than simple networking. I tried to join a previous laptop's Homegroup a few weeks back, but my desktop computer refused to join for some reason even though I supplied it with the correct password.
