I have a netbook with windows 7 sp1. It was in the PC homegroup with my old modem and router. I no longer have a router and have my internet connected to my PC with modem/wifi cisco modem.

I can connect to the internet on my netbook but am no longer in the homegroup with my PC. I get an error message when trying to join using the homegroup password printed from my PC. It just says an error has occurred.

What is the advantage to being in the homegroup? File sharing? How do I resolve this issue?

When I set up my new modem, I used the same username and password that I used with my previous modem.

Below are two links that may help. The first has checklists that may help solve your problem with wirelessly joining your homegroup. The second has more general information about homegroups and how they work.

How to Join a Windows 7 Homegroup

What is the Homegroup & How Does it Work?

One other thing you can try is to join the homegroup through a wired connection, and then see if you can also connect via wifi.

I went through all the settings. I had to set the UPnP in services to manual and on. The rest of the settings were correct.

I did notice that the UPnP on the modem is disabled. Would that make a difference?

When I ran the troubleshooter it said it fixed a problem with wireless adapter or access point.

I still can't join the homegroup on my netbook. The only thing I've changed is that I used to have a modem and router. Now I have a new modem with wifi built in and no external router.

(Quote) "...the UPnP on the modem is disabled. Would that make a difference? "

One way to find out is to enable it and see what happens.

Be sure to unplug and reboot everything whenever you change settings.

Besides sharing, one purpose of the homegroup is to protect your system from outsiders. Every time you join a new network Windows asks what kind it is. If it is Work or Public, then the homegroup function is disabled. If you don't make a choice Windows assumes public, and that choice persists until you try to join another new network.

When you changed from router to cisco modem Windows may have disabled homegroup on that one computer that now cannot join.

Double check by opening the Network and Sharing Center on that one computer and go to the section labelled View your active networks. Be sure the network mode setting is Home.

How to Change a Network Type in Windows 7

If the network mode is set to Public, and you are unable to change it, see Microsoft KB 2578723

Windows 7 Network connections are stuck in Public mode

I checked and it's set to a home network.

(the UPnP doesn't make a difference enabled or disabled on modem)

On the computer that will not join, change the network mode to public. When that change is confirmed, change back to Home and see if you are offered the homegroup to join.

I am already offered the group to join. It just won't let me join when I try. I'll try changing it to public and back again.

Okay I tried changing it to public and back to home network and I was offered to join an existing homegroup. I tried to join but still couldn't.

Snych date and time on each PC to the same internet time standard.

Be sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the computer that won't join.

    Change the password.

Try again to join with the new password.

I did try the synch time before I can do that again. I have to go and check how to change the homegroup password. File and print sharing is checked.

In Network and Internet section, click Choose HomeGroup and Sharing Options

Click the Change the Password link

Make sure that all computers in your HomeGroup are awake and that you can log on to all of them. Then click Change the Password

Windows offers a new password for you to use, but you can type one of your own instead.

    Click Next

Go to each of the other computers in your HomeGroup and click Start - Computer - HomeGroup

Click the Type New Password button and enter the new password
