    I am having an issue with IE11 on my new build running Windows 8.1 - details in My System.

    When connecting to links within some web pages in IE 11 I get 'Waiting for ....' in the tab header followed by 'This page cannot be displayed'

    Clicking on Fix Connection Problems gives the response 'Cannot identify problem'. On clicking on Close the page opens. One particular web site that I frequent Landscape Photographer - FM forums always has this issue and WindowsBBS sometimes. Most other sites including my home page Yahoo work fine.

    I am convinced that the problem lies in the new build as there is no problem with a Win 7 desktop and a Win 8.1 laptop on the network and I suspect a setting in the onboard Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) I218-V. The other peculiarity is that I must double click a link on FM to access it whereas the standard single click works on the laptop and on the Win 7 desktop.

    Firefox is slow connecting on FM, but it does show the appropriate page without issue.

    IE has been reset and is set up exactly the same as on the laptop which is running the same version of IE with the same add-ons.

    Usual checks have been made - reboot router, change cable, change physical ports on router to no avail.

    I'm thinking of installing a network card to bypass the onboard LAN chip - if I can find one that specifically states Win 8.1 support.

    Would appreciate any guidance to sort out this frustrating problem.

    I opened your link right up in IE 11 both in Win 7 and 8.1.

    Wild stab in the dark - maybe you need to update Flash.

    Definitely sounds like a networking problem. My first thought is to open adapter properties and uninstall QoS, which is not really needed. And next, uncheck TCP IP6, which also is not needed yet unless you have local network devices using IP6 (unlikely).

    Then, in Internet Options > Connection tab > LAN settings > uncheck Automatically detect settings, which has been sometimes troublesome if checked since the first XP.

    As for the onboard net adapter, I would check its installed services, there may be some sort of DNS service it uses side by side Windows DNS. In latter years, Intel has bundled all sorts of **** with the network adapters.

    Did you use the drivers from the motherboard cd or did you use the latest drivers from Intel? I believe the latest from Intel for I218-V was in October 2014. In either case, I would uninstall the adap[ter via Device Manager and uninstall any Intel software that got installed with the adapter. Then install the latest adapter driver ONLY. (download it first of course) If the driver installer does not give options for selective installs then first delete the contents of <username>\AppData\Local\Temp. Then run the installer, it will unpack its files in Temp. Copy the drivers dir you need, it will be named something like NDISxx. Or copy the entire structure & files (PRO 100 or PRO 1000). Cancel the Intel installer and use Device Manager to manually install just the drivers.

    Hi Pete.

    Try running this tool, Complete Internet Repair. Extract the contents of the zipped folder. When you run the program select all the checkboxes in the program and then click on the Go button. After the process has finished, reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

    Then see if IE11 works properly.

    Also have you installed the latest driver for your motherboards onboard LAN?

    If you're having problems with a site, try enabling the compatibility mode for the site. This forces a previous version of the Internet Explorer rendering engine to be used, which typically cures most problems. To access the compatibility mode, select Compatibility View settings from the Tools menu.

    Not likely a compatibility issue because:

    Thanks for the response - this is driving me crazy looking for a solution :)

    @TonyT

    Uninstalled QoS - no change.

    I had already unchecked TCP IP6

    In LAN settings unchecked Automatically detect settings - no change. This is checked on the Win 8.1 laptop which works OK.

    No Intel DNS services that I can see in Services - I use Open DNS

    Drivers - I used the driver from the mobo CD. Downloaded the latest driver from Intel. Tried to uninstall the adapter via Device Manager, but it never completed - just hung on the green bar going across. Could not stop process in Task Manager so rebooted to find the adaptor still installed. Loaded the new driver (only) over the top and Device Manager recognises it with date of 29 Sept 14. No change

    Disabled adaptor in BIOS and installed a compatible network card with Realtek chip. It works fine, but the issue remains in IE.

    Incidentally somewhere along the road Firefox perked up and now renders pages on FM instantly.

    No idea where to go next bar switching to Firefox as default.

    @MrBill

    Thanks for the suggestion - I had already put WindowsBBS & Fredmiranda.com into the Compatibility list

    @Evan

    Thanks for that applet, but I am vary leery of programs which offer to fix all issues :) Not run - yet.

    Understandable. If Firefox works then obviously its an issue with IE11 and if a reset hasn't solved it then I would start by just selecting the Repair IE11 option in the Complete Internet Repair Tool application and see if that solves it.

    Additionally, have you ran SFC?

    Evan - I had already run SFC and no issues were reported. Just ran it again with no issues reported.

    Ran the Repair IE option - the problem remains and I guess I'll have to live with it and use Firefox. Reinstalling 8.1 is not an option.

    Did you run IE without add-ons?

    No problems here with that site, Win 8.1 + IE 11

    Strange. Did you try starting in Safe mode?

    • Click the Power button at the Windows login screen or in the Settings charm. Next press and hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click Restart.
    • Windows asks you to choose an option. Select Troubleshoot.
    • In the Troubleshoot screen, select Advanced options
    • In the Advanced options screen, select Startup Settings
    • You are informed that you are about to restart in order to change several Windows options, including enabling Safe Mode. Click Restart.
    • Your computer restarts and displays nine startup settings, including Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command Prompt
    • Press F5 to enable Safe Mode with Networking.
    Now try again to access the site.

    When done, just reboot, Windows should reboot in 'normal' mode.

    Yes and found that I could not access the internet - my brain was so messed up in trying to sort this out that I completely forgot about Safe Mode with Networking :(

    In Safe Mode with Networking the site works fine :) So it must be a driver problem, but which one?

    The flatbed scanner is a prime suspect, if that would have an effect on IE. As in Win 7 I have to fool Windows into installing the Canon Lide 35 as a Lide 60 and it runs perfectly, but in 8.1 Action Centre constantly flags that the scanner has a problem.

    I'll remove that first and see if the issue remains.

    It's not the scanner driver.

    Well I would perform a clean boot in Windows 8.1 and see if any other background programs are conflicting with IE. What are you using for security software?

    I doubt it's a driver conflict.
    Somewhere there's a misconfigured registry key in IE or the network connection set by 3rd party software or a Windows update. Or a browser plugin (BHO or add-on).
