I have a small win7 32-bit netbook. I have two wireless sources, a router and an access point. After having come back from a vacation, the router connection works fine but the access point gives me no internet access, stating "unidentified network ". On the Network and Sharing page, it states "public network" under "unidentified network" and I cannot find out how to change that back to Home Network (it is solid black, not a link). I have deleted and rebuilt the access point connection and reset the access point itself but to no avail. Diagnostics cannot make a determination.I have also deleted any old wireless networks from the history that I had connected to in the past.

So, it appears to not be the network adapter, TCIP, DNS or any of that since the wireless router connection works fine. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Larry

I found my USB wireless adapter so I disabled the ethernet connection to my desktop and tried to access the access point. NADA! Same message... unidentified network/public network. So, does that definitively indicate that it is an access point issue?? If so, what could have happened? If not, the same questions remain. Thanks

The fact that one acct worked and the other didn't seemed to point to the access point itself. I have found out that other devices are not getting its signal, either. Can I ask on this thread about that??

The access pt has all lights working but no signal output. I pulled the plug on it for 1 minute with no benefit and I hit the RESET with no benefit. At no point have I been able to pull it up on the network at 192.168.1.245. All lights continue to work. Is this a typical scenario when these fail? Lights are on and no one is home?? It is a Linksys WAP54G. Thanks

Is the Linksys WAP54G connected to the router by ethernet cable? It should be. It's better to expand the WLAN using cat5 to the access point, rather than point-to-point or repeater mode.

    1. connect the access point to any computer using cat5.
    2. login to the access point web interface using its default ip address 192.168.1.245.
    3. configure it as an access point, not bridge, repeater or client.
    4. assign it a static LAN IP that is not a dynamic IP assigned by the router. For example, Linksys routers use 192.168.1-99 for static addresses and 192.168.1.100 upward for dynamic addresses.
    5. set the gateway IP to the LAN IP of the router.
    6. subnet - 255.255.255.0
    7. dns - LAN IP of the router.
    5. re-login.
    6. disable the access point's DHCP, let all addressing get handled by the router else will have conflicts.
    7. setup wifi: ssid, security, etc.
    8. unplug cat 5 from comp & connect it to any LAN port on the router.

    Hi Tony,

I would love to do all that but I cannot get my desktop (via ethernet cat5e) to access the AP. Same with my netbook if I hook it up directly to the AP. I have RESET it, too. Nothing. Of course, now that I have reset it, my netbook no longer even sees it in the wireless network list.

While hooked up directly with the netbook, I tried to ping it from a Command Prompt (Ran As Admin) to 192.168.1.245 and it failed, too.

Set up the static address and pinged. Same message. Transmit Failed, General Failure.

It is so weird since all the lights work when it is hooked up to the network. Not looking good?

If not, can I just get a wireless router and just use it as an access point?

Can the ap web interface be accessed from the desktop which is connected by wire to the router?
Yes, you can use a wifi router as just an access point. You will have to disable it's routing, i.e. disable DHCP.
