I know this is probably one of those "How Stupid I am " questions but I'm going to ask it any way.
I have a wired network with one of my machines running XP Pro. I must run XP because it drives my cutters & both of them have firmware that is not compatible with Win 7 or newer. Since they cost me $20K.00, I can't replace them. Now I have my design machine running with Win 7. I have a work around, I move my EPS file to the drive that has XP on it then reboot so that the file can be shared. There has to be a better way just can't think of it.

Can I just add my Win 7 machine to the network?

I don't need to see any files from the xp mach. I just need to see win 7 files on the xp mach. Can I just set the network up on the win 7 mach. & share the files?

It shouldn't be a problem as long as all computers have the same workgroup name.

In Windows 7, right-click on Computer (formerly My Computer), and down near the bottom, you will see the workgroup name for this PC. If it does not match the workgroup name for the XP computer, you can change it by clicking on Change Settings on the far right, and then click on the Change... button under the Computer Name tab. You may have to reboot Windows 7 for this to take effect.

Can't change computer name or workgroup

I looked at the work group & Computer name on the xp machine & it was slightly different than the 7 one. the work group name on the xp mach has the first letter in caps where the 7 one is all caps. Also first letter of the computer name on the xp machine is caps where none of the letters are caps on the 7 machine.

    ie: XP / Win 7

Work group - Dpigfx / DPIGFX
Computer name - Otiplex / otiplex

I followed your instructions to change them on the Win 7 mach but it will only allow me to cancel my changes. I'm lost(again).

The computer names shouldn't matter, although to avoid confusion, I would label each computer with its own unique name. The only names that have to match are the workgroup names.

For the record, I just changed Windows 7 from HOMENETWORK14 to HOMENETWORK15, and then back to HOMENETWORK14 again. I had to reboot each time for these changes to take affect. In addition, my workgroup names match perfectly on each PC, and have all caps on both Windows 7 and XP too.

EDIT: Here is a tutorial for changing the workgroup name in Windows 7 (you'll have to scroll down a bit)...

What is the Workgroup & How to Change it in Windows?

Still having problems with this network

Now when I try to access the shared files folder on the win 7 machine from the XP machine I get this message.
"you do not have the appropriate access rights for this server ".
Not sure where to go from here.

    Never mind...
I finally got everything in sync between the 2 machines.
You would think that these stupid computers would know what I mean not just what I say.
Thanks so much for your help. I will close out this topic. Ed.

    Good work, Ed.

How did you manage to solve the access rights?

    This may sound funny but...
I found that on one machine, I typed the numeric portion of the pass word using the alpha keyboard & on the other one I used the numeric key pad.
I just used the alpha keyboard for both & it worked.
Evidently, one of the keyboards translates the key strokes differently. At least for passwords anyway.

    That *is* unusual.

I have never encountered a similar issue - yet.

I have been in the computer business since 1967 & it's the first time I've ever heard of it.
To test it, I tried to log in on that machine by using the numeric key pad & got an "invalid password" response but when I typed it in using the alpha keyboard it was valid. Weird.
