Helping a friend with Windows 7 Home using Norton 360. When we run the Tune Up feature in Norton, it says "Detected Inoperable Device - Device Can't Start ". When we investigated in Device Manager it showed the Teredo Tunneling Adapter with the problem.

Did a lot of research on Microsoft and Norton websites and based on suggestions I found there I took the following actions:

1 - Disabled Teredo, restarted computer, enabled Teredo, ran Norton diagnostic with same result.
2 - Uninstalled Teredo and reinstalled - same result.
3 - In the registry, changed the TCPiP6 parameter to 0 - same result.

I found one more "fix" that involves entering the "netsch" environment and making some changes that would involve disabling Teredo, uninstalling, and resetting the Teredo client. However, before I go much further, I thought I would run this by the BBS community.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

What error does it show in the Device Manager?

Have you tried updating the driver for it?

Just ignore the error or disable the device, you don't really need it. The teredo adapter ia a MS virtual device that enables IP6 over IP4 networks. You are not using any IP6 networks.

That Tune Up feature of Norton's is designed for "dummies ". While a useful app for most business environments, it's not reliable enough for the advanced user. Most "tune up" apps cause more trouble than they are worth.

The 360 Tune Up may throw out that warning if the IP Helper service does not start or is set to manual or disabled. You don't need that service either.

Thanks Tony. I had done a bit of research and had figured out what the Teredo Tunnel did as far as allowing IP4 networks to communicate with IP6s but had no idea how far along we were into IP6. So I guess we won't be concerned until some time down the line.
