    Hi All,
We are upgrading our office to windows 8, but 1 computer is hardly ever used and is running XP. It will stay with XP, and should not be allowed to go online for security reasons.

All computers are networked, and share printers thru a netgear vpn router. Of cause they all can go online. Question: How can I prevent the XP computer from going online?

I opened the netgear router settings ( http://192.168.0.1 ), but can not find any setting blocking a computer from going on line.
Any one familiar with this router and is able to tell me how to do that?

    Thanks
    Sven

    Hi SVEN,

    Disable Computer Internet Connection Firewall

Hope this is what you want.
    Also found this snippet:
One thing I always do, when setting up any PC to use the internet, is to first make the connection and set it to show the icon on the taskbar when it's activated. Then I make a shortcut to that connection and put that on the desktop.
If the connection is active, clicking on the shortcut will open the status windows, from which you can click the button to Disable the connection. And if the connection has been de-activated (Disabled), clicking on the desktop shortcut will immediately RE-Activate the connection.
This little trick gives the user full control over whether their PC is on the internet or not.

I like to go OFF-Line when I'm doing my system maintenance, because I also disable my AV software when doing that.
So with just one or two mouse clicks, I can control my internet connection.
    Neil.

Hi SVEN, I can't guarantee anything regarding MS instructions - but why not try and see? If it doesn't work the way you want, you can re-enable the Firewall again. Neil.

Why not configure IE to work offline?

From IE select Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings.

Put a tick in the check box next to "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN ..."

Type in "0.0.0.0" in the address box and "80" in the Port box. Don't type in the quote marks of course, just what's inside them.

    Click OK

    Pretty easy it looks like.

    Funny that you mention that.

I've had a few programs that I did not want to access the web, and I configured them to use a proxy server that did not exist. Problem solved.

Would your suggestion stop anything / everthing on XP from accessing the web?

    MrBill,
I did what you suggested and it works, no on can get on line, unless they dig deeper.
Now I have to find out what it looking for updates.
HP printer is disabled and Java I uninstalled. Anything else I need to look at?
    Thanks

    Sven

Sven. Anything from Adobe I would remove. I know that they are capable of looking for updates if you told it to when it was installed. What is on it for a firewall? Some firewalls are capable or used to be capable from blocking certain addresses.

In the tools section of CCleaner, their is the option to disable services. I use it all the time.
