Resolved Linksys router 8 digit pin

    Setting up Internet Connection Sharing on Windows 7 machine. I'm using a USB wireless adapter on the host computer for internet. I connected a Linksys WRT54G to the LAN port, and planned to have other machines connected to it. Following Windows networking wizard, it recognized the router, then ask for the 8digit pin number located on a sticker on the bottom of the router. There's no such sticker there, and doesn't look like there ever was one. The stickers with the mac address, serial number, and FCC ID number are all there, but no pin number. Contacting Linksys got me nowhere. Because of the age of the router, they wanted me to pay more for tech help than the router cost. I can access the web setup, but couldn't find it. Anyone know what the number is or how to retrieve it?

    You do not need Internet Connection Sharing. What that does is routes all LAN-Internet connections through your computer.

    Others will be able to connect to the Internet using a network cable between their computer and the router, or by wireless.

    Don't use Internet Connection Sharing.

    If you want to control who can and cannot connect to the Internet at any given time, use the firewall rules and filtering in the router. You can enable or disble anyone whenever you want.

    Did you try to access the router by going to 192.168.1.1 and using admin as user and password as admin? Those are usually default. If it doesn't work, you can use a paper clip or a pencil to push the little recessed button in and hold it for about 15 seconds and that will default it. I had the same router and that was the default info. Nothing on the bottom with the password.

    I tried it without ICS, it connects but reports no internet. I also tried going to setup and look for the pin. Admin password doesn't work.

    Depress the little recessed reset button for about 30 seconds to reset it to factory defaults.

    Then try
    username: admin
    password: admin​
    If that doesn't work, try
    username:
    password: admin

    (In other words, leave the username blank).​

    SpywareDr, thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not having any problem getting into the router setup. It's not the password I need. It's the 8 digit pin code attached to the router. I don't know if the pin from another router like mine would work or not. I hear lots of them have the same pin per model.

    I have no idea where I got that number. Been in my old router several times. Must of been one of those brain farts that I hear other people say that they have. I have never had one. :D

    No, they're unique. The only thing you need it for though is if you were to use WPS. And you really don't want to do that.

    The default login on a wrt54g is:
    Username: blank, none needed
    Password: admin (all lower case)

    I'll say one more time, I'm not having a problem logging onto the router. The username and password is NOT what I'm looking for. I need the 8 digit PIN number.

    If your router doesn't have the 8 digit pin on the bottom, and if it does not have a button on the front of it, then it does not exist for your wrt54g. That pin is needed for Wifi Protected Setup. In Windows 7, you must select to setup the connection manually. You can't use Wifi Protected Setup.

    Earlier versions of the wrt54g do not have the button or a WPS pin.

    The WRT54G routers that do have Wifi Protected Setup have a pin # on the bottom, have a WPS button on the front and they also show the pin number on the WPS screen in the router Web interface.
