    Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
Error: error 651- The modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error.
Also, I Got this message while the error log was being created:
"TCP/IP NetBios Information has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. "

System: PC Desktop HP with Win 7 & IE9, 8GB mem, AMD Quad, Verizon DSL

I bought that PC in April 2010, running great untill 10/15/2011 when I noticed some sort of delay IE 9 opening web sites. Then, after 10/15/11 I could not access the net.
Did a restore, access the net through the LAN connection only, not the Broadband Connection. Verizon tech person told me there is a problem with my computer which I don't think is the problem. I suspect the problem is in Network Connection section, TCP/IP to be exact.
I spent some time reading about the same problem that some people out there are having as well as possible solutions but in my case I cannot find a cure for my connectivity situation.

#1. I'd like to know if anyone has better idea of this 651 connectivity error problem.
#2 Would reinstalling Win 7 entirely would help?

There IS a problem with your computer, possibly the ethernet card, misconfigured networking or more likely, malware. You should not be connecting via a WAN miniport with Verizon DSL.

Verizon modems have a built in router and use the LAN port, not WAN miniport. Older Verizon DSL, prior to about 2002, required the used of a miniport and dialup software. Today's DSL is an "always on" connection via ethernet, no software is required for Verizon DSL.

Also, IMHO I would never ever download a Windows system file off a non Microsoft web site & run that on my OS.

    Easy problem fix

    Forget all that Rasspoe nonsense…
i had the same trouble after a windows update..
i set internet options for ipv4 and ipv6 to manual and entered the ip and dns addresses manually, and it didnt make any difference.
So here`s what to do.. and it takes a few minutes, and no experience required.

first turn power off and unplug all leads.
then remove the casing so you can see he motherboard.
remove the battery (looks like a watch battery)
then plug in monitor "“ keyboard and power lead and boot up.
you will get an error message stating that the pc cannot boot up, this is because the battery has been removed.

what you have actually now done is reset the bios.

turn off the pc and remove all leads again, and insert the battery again.
reboot pc after plugging all leads back into the pc.

go to the internet icon in the bottom right hand side of the screen and open network and sharing folder. click on the area (on the map of your pc to internet) and it will run a diagnostic check for you, and repair the fault.

I would ignore the above advice. Resetting the bios has nothing at all to do with how Windows manages networking. Though the user may have solved his issue that way, resetting the bios was not the fix, something else changed too which allowed networking to function.

Well there you have it. Windows itself repaired the issue & NOT resetting of BIOS.

You could run the "Troubleshoot Problems" from networking icon to search for & repair the problem without going into BIOS.

"Does this mean the problem is fixed. Is the post intended to be sarcastic. Not sure I follow this one. "

That's the comment which I have received in my "Reputation ". Since I don't know who posted that, I am unable to respond.

Tony, I don't believe there is a problem with my ethernet card. It's possible that the new Verizon Modem may have a bug that the tech engineers may not be aware of or it could be some win 7 software updates going rogue. I restored the pc back to two previous days when it last worked without the "651" error but no sucess going on line. As of this moment I could go on the net but without my Verizon suite bundled apps (firewall, antivirus, etc...) I tried to download the stuff (only 90% of it, but it won't finish installing). The tech support people are unable to help. By the way and unfortunately PCs don't come with the original disc. So, I went to the store and got a win 7 os disc, but I am having second thought because my PC come bundled with lots of HP softwares that I may lose if I reinstall win 7 that will erase everything. I am wondering if my PC can operate without the HP softwares it came with (which I rarely use).
Let me know what you think.........

I would not use the Verizon bundle of software. Windows 7 has its own good firewall. Use Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus. It's free and works well.

You don't really need the HP bundled software either. Go to the HP support site and download all the drivers for your model HP. There will also be some additional software there if you want it.
