I started a similar thread about this machine some time back but didn't get an answer to the problem before I had to move on to something else.
I'm supposed to be fixing a video problem on a Dell Latitude d830, however, I can't find it. It has no video signal to the LCD. An external monitor works fine. It's not just a backlight issue. There's no image at all. Toggling between CRT/LCD is same. The CRT stays on, nothing on the LCD. I replaced the video data cable and inverter and also switched LCD panels.

    Now,
It's been a while, but I had to get back on this one. The story hasn't changed except for one thing. I learned about a video test on Dells. Press "D" and the power button at the same time. The screen lights up and displays different colors as it's supposed to. It still won't display the post or Windows loading. It's just black. That does show the mobo and display are communicating. In the meantime, an external monitor works perfectly. It's not the lid switch as I once suspected, but I'm open to new ideas.

Does pressing the fn + F7 or F8 (i forget which one is the monitor key) key do anything.

I've had the same with a D820, and I can tell you: You'll have to get a new system board.

You'll most likely have a NVIDIA chip on the system board, and the chip (partially) failed.

    Read: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19344869.aspx

I purchased a new system board with integrated (Intel) graphics and I'm back with a working system.

It's the f7 key. As I stated in the post, I can toggle between CRT external monitor and the LCD display. The external monitor works fine and I can see Windows fully loaded. The laptop display remains black. It seems to me if the video chip had failed, neither display should work. The fact Windows can be seen on the external monitor shows the video circuit is working. The LCD display shows different color screens at the pre boot video test.

Like I told you: Exactly what happened to me. This is what I should have linked to.

You didn't confirm what graphics option you have: NVIDIA or Intel?

    Nvidia class action suit

I'm looking for a replacement board with Intel GPU. Learned yesterday about a class action suit against Nvidia. Not just Dells, seems just about everything with Nvidia chips stopped working or gave some kind of problems during this time period. Here's a link

    Hi,

Yea, I knew about that one, but I'm not interested. While I did buy my laptop in the US, I don't live in the US, there's no way I was going to sent in my laptop for repair.

It doesn't matter now anyway, as the claim period is over (per March 14 2011).

Just find a replacement board; the Precision M4300 has the same board as the D830. The MY199 board is the one with integrated Intel graphics.

Found a new one at Notebookparts for $333.95
