Hello I'm new to the forum, hope to not make any mistakes on posting..
I have an hp dv 2500 laptop windows vista, I had it for 3 years and wasn't untill 3 days ago that it would suddenly freeze and the only way to fix it was by shutting it off but as soon as I would turn it back on, it would take always about 10 mins for it to freeze up again, I tried to boot it on safe mode and tried to do a scan for viruses but it also froze after 10 mins.. I tried this soo many times.. and also tried to quickly restore it back to a certain time before it would freeze but while it said Please wait..etc" it ended up freezin up again. So I haven been able to do anything to it since it freezes..

Also while it freezes the hard drive light stops blinking..

Any ideas to what could it be? And what could I do?

I also wasn't able to back up any of my stuff :( any recommendations of an oline back up?

    Welcome to WindowsBBs :)

One of the common causes of freezing is overheating - when did you last check that the cooling vents were clear of dust, etc?

When the laptop is booted up do you hear the cooling fan running? If not the fan may have failed and the CPU is shutting down on overtemperature. You may be able to see the fan through one of the cooling vents and see if it is running.

Other causes could be a failing hard drive or other hardware problem, but check out the overheating possibility first and post back.

You now appreciate the value of maintaining a current backup of your data :) I have no recommendations for an online backup as I do not use them or indeed trust tham, but that is a personal opinion only. My backups are made to both internal and external hard drives and at any one time I have 3 copies of my data, including the original.

If it turns out that the laptop has hardware problems which may or may not include the hard drive it is always possible to connect the hard drive to another computer, using an adaptor for a laptop drive and, if the drive is recognised, to copy the data off.

Hello..sorry I took forever to update

Well I opened up my hp laptop and cleaned it but I'm still having the same problem but now when I turn on the laptop I get a black screen with a line (-) just showing at the top corner.. I can't. Get to the windows logo.. I already ordered my recovery disk from hp to try to reinstall windows but it did not work! As soon as I got to the recovery manager screen and clicked o reformat recovery partition I got an error.. I will post the error tomorrow as I can't find any fix to this so far.. I think I need to delete the partition on the hard drive but I don't know how to since I can't. To the desktop screen

Please follow the guide in this link to test your memory, if it comes up clear repeat the test for the hard drive. Reinstalling the operating system may cure the fault but I think it is far more likley to be hardware. I suspect that a memory module has died, but lets see what results these tests produce.

You could also try to run the PC in safe mode and see if the problem persists and tell us what happens.

Please post any error messages as they occur and we will help to find a solution. The more information you can give us the sooner we can help to resolve the problem.

    Hello..
I still can't access my computer through any mode, the only thing that im able to do is run the memory and hard drive test.
Memory test went fine there was nothing wrong with it. But when i tried to check the hard drive i get this error 10 seconds later #1 -07 Fail.

But the hard drive light still blinks, and i tried taking it out and putting it back on just in case it was not in place.. but i still cant get through the #1 -07 Fail message.

Hopefuly someone here can help me? :) thanks.

OK, we need to check your hard drive more thoroughly. Please give me the manufacturers name and model number from the case of the hard drive and I will give instructions to download the correct hard drive diagnostics.

Ok this is what I get after installing the recovery dvd "recovery manager" screen. I click next then it takes me to the "Factory image recovery" then "Reformatting the windows partition of your hard disk drive" is checked.. under that it says "process" but beore there's any process and error window pops it says "Error 0x200110020000100A If this issue continues, please contact HP Support.

You will need to use another computer to download the diagnostics for your hard drive and burn the image file to a CD. This can then be used to boot the PC into Dos, it will then run the diagnostics.

I am not sure what your PC is installed with in the way of memory. You might have two memory modules, in which case it may be worth trying to run the PC with just one of the modules and if no result, swap them over. The built in memory test may not detect all memory faults.

If all else fails a new hard drive may fix the error but I can give no guarantee unless you can run the diagnostics to prove the health of the drive either way.
