I have a Galaxy S3 (19300) running ICS 4.0.4. I am a true (and old) novice and I keep hearing about upgrading to JellyBean 4.1. I also hear of JellyBean4.2.
My question is - would you recommend an unofficial upgrade or rather wait for an official notification and download. Largely, I'm a phone and SMS man and a newsreader. Should I even worry about Beans and the like?

I need to ask the obvious question concerning the Upgrade of the Samsung Galaxy S3 from ICS 4.0.4. to Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
I see that many people have done it and love it. Would one of those who have done briefly explain how they did it and how long did it take to download 290MB?
I tried via Wi-Fi and Kies and after 8 hours only 2% had downloaded.
What experiences can you share with the uninitiated?

Where you saw where many have done it and love it, would be the place to ask this question.

I just updated my galaxy S2 and my wife's S3 today. It took about 10 minutes for the S2 and about 15 minutes for the S3. Both updated fine with no hicups. Both are on AT&T and updated through the update selection in the settings.

@ dajman - I would suggest that if you only had 2% after 8 hours then something is very wrong. -the actual firmware download should take seconds to download to your PC and not much longer when actually flashing the phone. I`m not keen on rooting or flashing my phones though - (they are too expensive to void their warranties) so I can`t really help much or tell you much more. - You WILL get better answers at an android forum though..
