Windows mail will allow, but does NOT save any SMTP port changes.
I need port 587 and not 25 to allow sending of mail.
Problem is, everytime I exit WM or reset the PC, it reverts to port 25.
I searched the registry for SMTP and the decimal VALUE was 25.
I modified this to HEX 24b (decimal 587) within the correct email account record.
Despite re-booting it still insists on defaulting to 25
Can this be fixed?
Or is this just another Vista idiosyncrasy we have to live with?
Come back XP/Outlook Express.
Microsoft are a bit like some British politicians - insular, arrogant, uncaring, dishonest and totally unaware of what effect their inexplicable behaviour has on the majority of us, who just want a quiet life!

I think server error message would relate to the inability to send mail ? - there are a host of hits for various ISP's to be found here
Is the problem that you can change the SMPT port through the dialogue shown in #11 in the URL I first posted, but it is not saved after you hit Apply and reboot?
Difficult for me to use anything but Google for info as I run neither Vista nor Windows Mail.

As I said;

(At least for more than the current session - In other words, (at the risk of further repeating myself);
"If I exit WM or re-boot the PC, the SMTP port setting of 587, (which has worked fine up to that point), has defaulted back to 25 when re-loading WM".
This of course doesn't work, so I have to change the value again, which of course disappears if the session is ended, and so on and so forth, ad infinitum.
Oh and PS - I never mentioned "Server error message???" in my first post.

I can change the smtp port in my win mail and the change sticks just fine. I suspect that you may be using an Internet security program that scans your email. If using antivirus for email then check the settings in that program.Usually, email scanning programs seamlessly use local proxy to scan & send mail. Perhaps the av program or security program disallows the changes to stick. (I don't use antivirus on my Vista because I only use Vista for testing purposes and for t-shooting others' computers)
Hi TonyT - sounds feasible, I will check and let you know. For the record I use Trend TIP, and prior to changing ISPs, (now using Three.co.uk mobile broadband), obviously didn't have this problem.
What makes it worse is the fact that I have several accounts set up with differing return addresses, so changing them all everytime is a ball ache.
Meanwhile, I have downloaded the Thunderbird offering from Mozilla to try.
I don't particularly like Vista (still, after 18 months of persevering), or Window Mail anyway.
So I will install the Mozilla stuff and check it out (just hope it's not like Chrome!)
I still have this unresolved problem with Windows Mail on Vista HP SP2.
1) Brief recap:
I needed to change the smtp port number to work with my mobile phone connection.
(For some reason they were blocking 25)
WM worked fine until I exited, when it 'lost' the port change and reverted to 25.
I even tried looking in the registry - no joy.
I have just been re-entering the port number change each time I have loaded the prog.
The plot has thickened!
I have just discovered that it is not only port number changes that are not saved, also changes to Server detail is lost if the prog is closed and restarted.
This has just come to light, because my dope of an Email provider company(Easypost), have decided to drop their OK system for the biggest heap of c**p since nellie the elephant passed by, and left her calling card in the road!
When I put in the new pop3 and smtp URL's and tried it, it sent and received mails fine - no problems.
After the Pc was closed down and re-started, it didn't work. On investigation I discovered that, like the port numbers, the server detail had reverted to the old settings.
Is it possible that WM has become corrupted?
The system is Vista Home Premium SP2 fully patched
Do I need to bite the bullet and try WLM or can this be fixed?
Write down all tyhe pertinent infor you need for mail, ie username, passwd, pop server. smtp server, ports. Then delete the account. Your mail will still be there. Then create a brand new account using the settings you want.
