Microsoft Mail Creating Recovered Item by Date Folders

My friend is running Windows Vista and using Microsoft Mail. She had a problem with being unable to delete items so I followed some KB article that had me back up stuff and do a restore on the data files.

Now, incoming messages generate a recovered items folder with sub folders that contain the date for each day. How do I stop this? Is it some sort of auto-back up thing?

P.S. Her anti-virus has expired and says that she's running unprotected. Could this be a virus attack?
