Recently I have been trying to help a friend who is running XP (SP2) and OE6. He frequently receives emails with pictures attached in the JPG format. Clicking on the attachment produces the message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folders Options Control Panel ". My friend is therefore unable to open the file and view the picture.

I navigated to the File Types tab of Folder Options and scrolled down to extension JPG only to find that it was associated with a Kodak image display program (cannot remember its name). I then right-clicked on the attached file in the email and saved the file to the desktop. When the desktop copy was clicked on it immediately opened in the Kodak program.

I then went back to folder Options and changed the association to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. When clicked on in the email, the attached file still displayed the same message "This file does not have...." but when saved to the desktop it opened in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

This problem is identical to the one in this thread Click here but no solution was provided there. Does anyone know the cause and solution to this problem?

    Try this approach ....

Save the attachment to the hard drive - not the desktop

Right-click on the saved file > Open with

Select appropriate application and check the "Always open with..." option. and test.

Another possibility is to reset the associations for Windows Picture and Fax Viewer ....

    Start > Run > regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll > Enter

Other possibility - uninstall the Kodak software. If that solves the problem try a reinstall/update and see what happens.

Thanks PeteC for your quick response. I will try your suggestions when I next get to visit my friend and report back here. However he lives some distance from me so I may not see him for a few days.

I appreciate your suggestion MrBill, but my friend is not sufficiently computer literate to perform PeteC's ideas.

Incidentally PeteC, when you suggest saving the file to the HDD and not the desktop, I presume you mean save direct to the C: drive, or do I misunderstand you?

Hi, I have seen the same problem on my brother inlaws PC, it installed the programme when he installed his camera, we gave the Kodak programme the flick, they are a very invasive programe. you can do just about everything in Office Picture manager that you can do in Kodak.
    Cheers Des.

    Hi PeteC

Tried both your suggestions but without success. I associated JPG extension with MS Paint and it opened with that program each time I clicked on it either on the C: drive or on the desktop. (incidentally why did you specify C: drive and NOT desktop - what is the difference?)

I have uninstalled Kodak EasyShare but still it is impossible to open a JPG file direct from the email, it will only open when 'Saved as' to another location. I suspect there is some sort of corruption in OE6 (incidentally my friend has IE7 running), as sometimes clicking the X in top right of window fails to close the program and Ctrl, Alt, Del results in a 'Not responding' message. Is there any way to reinstall OE7 without losing all emails previously received?

Edit: For '...reinstall OE7' please read OE6. IE7 is corect

When you chose the program to open it with and it opened fine, did you put a check in the box at the bottom that said to use this program each time or something similar?

MrBill - yes I did check the box and thereafter any JPG files opened in Paint, but still would not open direct from the attachment bar on the email.

Another thing that makes me feel that either OE6 or IE7 (or both) may be corrupted is that if (after my post above) I attempted to close IE7 by clicking on the X in the top right of the window I got a message like "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close......" and all open occurrences of IE then closed down.

My friend also has another problem which may or may not be associated with this one, and that is he has no sound. I have not yet investigated further on that problem, but it may be that I should start another thread if I cannot find the answer from my researches.

Another thread on the sound would be good. I don't know what to tell you about the box being checked and it don't remember it. Maybe in IE, go to Tools/Options and delete Temp files and if it is IE6, put a check in the box for the off line ones also. Delete History and Cookies also. You could also try to do Error Checking after the above and see if that helps.
Open My Computer, and then select the local disk you want to check.
On the File menu, click Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, select the Scan for Automatically fix file system errors. Click Start and it will tell you it will do this on the next restart. Click OK then get out of there and do a reboot. Let it do it's check and see if that helps. It will take a couple of minutes to do it. Don't do anything while it is checking. It will then boot into Windows like it usually does.

The desktop is considered to be a temporary location - no real problem in this case, but a problem with programs, such as HijackThis which write a log file. A matter of principle I guess.

If your friend is having problems with IE 7 I suggest going to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Windows Internet Explorer 7 which rolls the computer back to IE 6. Test then reinstall.
