My wife uses Outlook at work (her pc is on a network )
She's saved numerous emails on CD, which for the most part are .msg file extension.
We have OE installed on the home pc (have Outlook - not installed)
We normally use Thunderbird at home (mail client, not the drink)
I can open the messages in Thunderbird, but much of a given message is unreadable.

In OE (6) I see no option to "open saved message" from a different folder or the CD drive, as I can in Thunderbird. Don't know if that option exists in Outlook.

At least for the messages already saved on CD (with .msg extension), is there an easy way to view / print these on the home pc, EVEN if I do install Outlook, or with OE or Thunderbird, etc?

For future messages, if she saves them on CD, is there a way for her to specify the format they're saved in on CD, so they're easily viewable at home with either OE or Thunderbird? Thanks for any suggestions!

I guess the easiest solution for future is for her to forward messages to home email account, but still might want to save some at work on CD / flash drive.

CORRECTION: Outlook (9.0) - older versin - is installed on home pc.
It also can't open / read the messages saved on CD, even though the file properties say they are "Outlook" files. Maybe that's because the version of Outlook on home pc is considerably older than her version at work??

I just played around with .msg for the first time.
It's sure wants to be opened with OutLook.

Might consider just forwarding the mail to your home account..

But, when saving, you get a standard Save As and can select a few different fomats like plain text and html....

    Thanks Steve,

Do you think the reason I can't open the .msg emails saved on CD is because the Outlook 6 we have to try and use at home (don't use it normally) is too much older than the version wife uses at work? I don't know what the newest Outlook ver is now.

Would (under ideal conditions) Outlook Express be able to open messages saved from Outlook (in the .msg format). The issue is that she's already saved a bunch of these emails on CD in the .msg format, and many may no longer be available to forward to home, or save in different format, etc.

I can actually open most of the .msg files using Thunderbird, but most of the headers are totally jacked, whether I use Show All or Normal headers, whether I choose display in html, simple html, or plain text.

The older ver of Outlook refuses to open the .msg files at all and the much newer OE has no option (that I can find) to look for saved messages in a different location. I can't decipher where OE stores its messages - if it's even a possibility that I could copy the .msg files to that folder. Even then, I don't know that OE would handle the .msg format files.

    Thanks again.

You should try coping the files off the cd and onto your hard drive. Might need to right click ->properties and uncheck the read only function. Then see if your older Outlook will open them.

I use Outlook 2003 and copied one of the msg files to my other machine with OE. I right clicked on the file and tried several different open with options without luck...

I had copied a couple of the .msg files to my HDD. I looked at Properties - they're not marked as "Read Only" - but are marked Archive. My ver of Outlook still couldn't open, and I find nowhere to direct OE to look in a particular folder on the HDD for messages - even if it could open .msg format files.
    Thanks!
