In the hope of a fix - has any one got a solution to the following problem.
Windows XP Home shut off during a power failure .The resulting action happened ie ; I got a blank screen on Windows Start up, with no desktop icons or task bar or right click functionality
On ALT CTL DEL ie can go to new task and run explorer.exe and everything is normal on creating another user account the problem is the same .
I tried a System restore , picked a date and pressed the button nothing happened , I need to check that the system start up and recovery is checked but short of a roll back on system recovery has anyone any ideas as to a simple and straight forward way to trouble shoot what seems a fairly common problem
I have a Windows XP Home restore disk if eventually needed
I cant quite remember but the only brief clue I got was List ID 900; 0;. 900 or something similar
Many thanks in advance for your help
Best wishes
Colin

A couple of virii can cause this problem, perhaps best to rule this out first. Hopefully starting in safe mode is ok, if not to start Internet Explorer open task manager (ctrl-Alt-Del) click on the application tab then new task button and type iexplore.exe in the new task dialog.

I switched on the System restore now but unfortunately they are no roll back points
I also tried the Fix 195 vbs script from Kelly Korner this did not work and I have still to activate the desk top from msconfig , new process and run the explorer.exe command
I go back to the original clue on start uo after the power failure can not find file idlist, :0:900, c;\

Those rootkits have more than meets the eye and newer variants are written to break things if someone tries to fix them. I can see that you have more work to do. The trained analysts who know how to handle this infection have been having difficulty posting here and getting into long fixes. Dell is working on fixing the posting bug in the new forum software,
