    HI - HELP FOR A NON-TECHY MUM PLEASE :)

Our not-much used laptop recently ran an automoatic windows update after which I got the message:

    IE stopped working:

    cannot find 'http//*chinese characters*/

I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of since Boxing Day to sort this out..........malware/spyware etc etc

    It's also 'failing' to update/install SP1 for Vista (32-bit)

I've even tried installing the Windows6.0KB936330-X8 thing off the MS website - but this won't install either

I'm completely losing it here  - after 3 days of transfering possible solutions.

Has anyone else had the same issues and, if so, please can you tell me (simply) how to get rid of this problem????

    Try This

    Hi
Unless you have a valid O/S version chances are that the update has curropted the system and changed the language pack to Chinese.
This could well be a case of a hacker getting in your system.
You could try repiaring your system with the Installation CD
    ;)

thanks - not sure how to do this but currently working my way through some stuff from MS - trying to figure out which start up prog is affecting it cos without them it's working ok!

The IE is part of the Vista package that came on my laptop - so I've not got any Vista disk.

In that case, try to restore your Laptop to the factory image.
Please back up your files as this process deletes all files and restores your computer to the original factory shipped condition.
If you can tell me the model & make of your laptop.I can help you out.
TIP:- Press F11 During startup to access recovery manager option!!

    Hey

Well download it on the computer you are viewing this website and here's the download link
and then take it(RSIT.exe) to your laptop place it on your desktop and run it.
    The steps are:
Save the file to your desktop
Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool
At the disclaimer, please use the drop down box to select 3 months for the file/folder search, then click Continue
As noted on the disclaimer, RSIT will check for the existence of the latest version of HijackThis, then attempt to download and install it if needed.
Please allow RSIT access through your firewall if prompted.
When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
Please post the contents of both logs in your New Topic so the moderators can take a look at it and see what your main problem is
