[InActive] 'all programs' and 'C: drive' not showing
I have just successfully removed several trojans and spyware from my son's computer [95 items including about 31 tracking cookies]. They have done some weird stuff and I am wondering if there is a known fix to save a reinstall. It is a registered copy of XP home and I do have the disk. Maybe the repair utility? I am unsure how to do that but have heard of it.
What the infections have done is:
1] drive C: does not show in 'widows explorer' or 'my computer' or any 'locate file' boxes any more. I have got around this for now by right clicking the start menu and selecting 'explore' and it shows there [strange].
2] messed up the start menu and removed several things. I have easily managed to get back the control panel and all other such links [which had just been turned off in the start menu properties], but the thing that is puzzling me is that the 'All Programs' link is just gone. I have got around this by copying the start menu programs folder [from the explorer I managed to open] and pasting it into the start menu.
Both fixes give him some use of the computer but are cumbersome and undesirable.
I did a 'restore' to a point a few weeks back thinking that the infections may have altered the registry [hence the missing items] but this did not resolve anything, and in fact the restore utility said that no changes had been made.
Has anyone got any useful suggestions, apart from the obvious reinstall and cutting off my son's hands so he can't do it again. He seems to have got the infections from downloading codecs so he could watch movies online, at least I think that's it, as some of the things found by SuperAntiSpyware had the word 'codec' in the name.

Hi Skunk
Welcome to WindowsBBS
Lets see if this will help things. We may at some point have to call in noahdfear, But lets see what happens.
Please do these in the order given.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.
Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Post the entire report in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
It's best to disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool.
Check this link for any applicable programs you may have.
Close all open programs and windows
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
Vista users right click Combofix.exe and select Run As Administrator.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Note - ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note - Combofix makes some changes when run to prevent autorun/autoplay of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices, to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you to use those devices, please ask how to reset it.
