msconfig not opening
Hi, First post, so please be patient..
I noted this am that msconfig would not open, I have scanned machine with Norton and sypbot and cleaned out what I found. Restarted, still no msconfig. Read some more on line suggestions, checked registry key (there). Tried to run entry as cmd from run. No go. Ran Hijackthis 1.99.1 scan. Log below.

Welcome to WindowsBBS DMWjr
First, please open the Task Manager and End Process on the following process if shown on the Processes tab.
MSConfig.exe
Now, navigate to C:\Windows\system32\dllcache and see if the file msconfig.exe is present.
If present, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries and delete msconfig.exe
Now right click a blank space in that folder and select Refresh
A new msconfig.exe should appear
If not, go back to the dllcache folder, copy the msconfig.exe file then Paste it into the Binaries folder.
Try running msconfig again (you can just double click it in the Binaries folder).
Let us know the outcome.

msconfig still refuses to open
Thanks for the reply. I regret it took me so long to report results.
I tried the suggestions concerning the dllcache and HelpCtr\binaries locations of msconfig.exe. OF note, these folders often took an extremely long time to open and W Explr chrashed a few times when my clicking got impatient,
After deleting the copy in the binaries folder, the program did reappear, but still failed to run.
I tried other locations from which to launch the program and renamed the file by adding 1,2, etc. Still no go.
Of note, when I initiated a restart to see if that would have any effect, an error message tied to msconfig appeared. It seem to have something to do with a "memory exception" [[/b]/B](?) but disappeared before I could record the tag.
I am a bit frustrated at this point and would appreciate any further suggestions.
EDIT: I have System Mechanic 6, which sports an alternative startup manager, Thinking I might go ahead and try selectively disabling startup programs to see if any were related to msconfig not opening I got to "nwiz", looking it up in process libraries I found that while many recognize it as a component of NVIDIA -- the maker of my video card -- others claim it is spyware that sends email contacts for spamming ("proved using xsoftspy (?). When I went back to disable it I fould the right click "disable" option was grayed out and unavailable. Even if it is not related to my problems with msconfig, I find this suspicious. Other programs in the list also appear resistant to disable through SM 6.

nwiz is fine.
Lets get a better look at things. Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss .exe) and save it to your desktop.Close all applications and windows .
Double click on dss .exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt , which will be maximized and extra.txt , which will be minimized.
Post the contents of main.txt only for now.
