Google Redirecting

They are going to reformat my machine on Monday, but gave me the option to try and repair myself. I need help. I have a RVS.net pop up as well as google is redirecting itself when I try to click on a search result. It will redirect to websites such as local talent. Here is a HJT log:

My System

Welcome to WindowsBBS kdawg8762

Please download the HijackThis Installer from here and install it. Delete the version 1.99.1 you currently have. Run a scan and place a check next to the following entry, then close all other windows and click Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: attrib - {7226429B-3AFD-452B-8DED-77563EFAF778} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\attrib.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [plite731] C:\WINDOWS\plite731.exe

Close HijackThis and delete the file C:\WINDOWS\plite731.exe

Next, lets first run a tool specialized to address an infection that I believe to be responsible for some of the items petejones' instructions cleaned up. Please download FixWareout from here
  • Save it to your desktop and run it
  • Click Next, then Install. Make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish
  • The fix will begin. Please follow the prompts
  • If your firewall gives an alert (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet) please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
  • Then you will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load .... this is normal.

Once the desktop loads, please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

My System

Looks good. Lets tidy up.

Delete Fixwareout.exe and the C:\Fixwareout folder.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the boxes to the left of:

    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch
    • Java Cache
    • Recycle bin

  • The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All".
  • Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
Reboot

Then, lets run an online scan to see if there's anything else hiding. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Post the Kaspersky log.

Here is a copy of the scan log, 12 VIRUSES? Sweet Lord....47 infected files? How does this happen, I update definitions and run virus scan weekly (granted its Norton, but its the company PC), run ad aware and spybot S&D weekly and update them every time. How do i get 12 viruses and the google problem, et al.... If you have any idea I am dang curious. Anyway, here is the requested file:

My System

It's not as bad as it appears. The only real threat is the following, which needs to be deleted.

C:\info.exe

There were a couple of files detected belonging to RealVNC, which are not a threat when used in conjunction with the program. They are detected because of their ability to remotely administer, and because they are sometimes used by malware.

Other files detected were in the Norton quarantined folder, which needs to be emptied via the Norton interface.

Empty the recycle bin again when the above is complete.

There are also some infected files in system restore points. If you're satisfied that the computer is working properly, clear the System Restore points.

Clear past system restore points and create a new one.
Right click My Computer and select Properties. On the System Restore tab, check the box to turn System Restore off. Click Apply. Now, uncheck the box and click Apply. Click OK, then OK to close the System Properties dialog.

Verify a new restore point was created.
Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
Select 'Restore my computer to an earlier time', then click next.
You should have a newly created System Checkpoint available. If so, click Cancel. If not, click Back and select 'Create a restore point' then click Next. Give the restore point a name and click next.

As for how this happens ...... it only takes one wrong click or visit to the wrong site. The infection(s) you had are malware. Antivirus detection for malware is in general mediocre at best, since it's mostly dedicated to true virus detection. The antispyware applications you mentioned are both good, but as with any can only have detection for known bad files. Since the malware writers are constantly pushing out new files to avoid detection, it's an uphill battle for the scanners to remove everything. There are other steps you can take for prevention. Geri has posted some very helpful information and recommendations regarding future protection in the following link.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Surf safe!

Odd

I don't have a "my computer" icon to click on. SO i don't know how to do the restore point part. Also, symantec will not start for some reason, it does daily upon reboot, but i can't call it up.

My System

The My Computer link in the Start menu will work the same.

What does happen when trying to start norton? Maybe do a repair install?

My System

Right click the Start button and select Properties. Click the Customize button that it not greyed out. Click The Advanced tab. Scroll down the list of Start Menu items and for My Computer select 'display as a link'. OK your way out and click Start. My Computer should be in the right hand column.

Open the Control Panel then Internet Options. On the Programs tab, click Reset Web Settings. Allow the homepage to be reset as well.
