adware everywhere

Hello,

I'm trying to clean up my daughter's computer, and can't get rid of all the adware/trojans/worms. I've run Ad-aware many times, as well as Spysubtract, which was recommended by Microsoft. I've run them in Safe Mode as well, and always, within a few minutes of signing on, I get a million pop up ads and the speed slows. I'd also like to get rid of all remnents of AOL, Yahoo, and all instant messaging programs. I've deleted the applications, but, clearly, remnants remain. Please help. I've attached a Hijack this log. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Looks like you have some kinda mess there. Lets clean things up!

Below you will find my results and recommendations from your HijackThis! log file analysis. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

First thing I'd like you to do is to rename the HijackThis executable, hijackthis.exe to <anything of your choice> .exe, as long you change it's name. This is just in case you have a Vundo infection, which by design, hides itself from the HJT executable file to avoid detection.

Btw, what kind of sites are you getting pop us for?

Then I'd like you to run a special file finding tool which will likely remove a bunch of stuff and filnd others as well. After that post a new HJT log, without fixing anything and we'll get down to seeing what's left over for us to attack.

Download combofix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Run HJT and post both logs here for me to review.

combofix.exe doesn't produce log

First, thanks for the help.

I ran combofix.exe from the link and nothing happened. I downloaded the executable, saved it to a folder, ran it again - still no log. It opens a window, says it is scanning my files, then the window closes and all my icons are gone, and no log. I ran it a third time, this time with Windows Task Manager running so I could monitor any activity, with the same results.

I'm wondering if it is being disabled by Spysubtract.

What am I doing wrong?

Cael

Look in your 'C' drive for logs named 'ComboFix', ComboFix2' up to ComboFix3, it then will rewrite the first one.

Also, be sure you allow any alerts from your anti-spyware apps.

I get an alert from WinPatrol about a new file running from temp folders.

Same result

I saved it again, this time to the root of C:\ and no difference, it gives the version, date of download, and the folder in which it is stored.

When I double click the executable, a window appears with a warning about the application. It allows me to type "y" to contiue or "n" to abort. If I just type "y", nothing happents. I must type "y, Return" for the application to start. But, my desktop also disappears, as if it's been interrupted. Is there another application that I could use?

OK, we'll move to another anti-spyware tool, not quite as good at finding things, but it's also a remover as well.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 formerly Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the [Start Update] button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
  • Turn on the computer
  • Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
  • Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.

Launch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the [Save report as] button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.(Please edit out any 'cookie', 'Recyler' and 'System Volume Information' Folder references from the AVG log)

Problems with Safe Mode

Everything works fine until I have to log into safe mode. Then the key board fails. I can navigate the DOS screen, but once the IDs are displayed and I have to type in password, keyboard freezes. I've used safe mode a dozen times over the past couple of days with no problems.

Ok, because ComboFix won't run we need to run the fixes individually. Or likely we'd have been nearly done.

We need to rid the Qoologic infection, and Vundo as well.

First Qoo:
Please download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip
  1. Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix.
  2. Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
  3. Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
  4. If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.
Post the contents of the Qoofix logfile.

After reboot, VundoFix:

download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click *VundoFix.exe* to run it.
  • Click the *Scan for Vundo* button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the *Remove Vundo* button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click *YES*
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click *OK*.
  • Please post the contents of C:\*vundofix.txt* and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the *Scan for Vundo* button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

Then give me a new HJT log file as well, along with the two special tool logs.
