Internet Explorer re-directing

Hello!

I'm having a problem on this computer where for some reason there are some websites that I can not access... they are always redirected to some kind of search webpage.

As far as I know yahoo.com, amsouth.com, and webroot.com are three domains that I can not access.

I have run SpyBot S&D, TrendMicro Housecall, and Webroot Spy Sweeper. Found a couple of cookies, nothing else.

Thank you in advance for the assistance.

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please go to Add/Remove, and if found, uninstall the following:
Messenger Stopper <<<--read here

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

I'd like to chek your hosts file please:
  • Open HJT, click the 'None of the above, just start the program' button.
  • Then click the 'Config' button in the lower right hand of the program.
  • Then select the 'Misc Tools' button.
  • Click the 'Open hosts file manager' button.
  • Then hit the 'Open in notepad' button.
  • Copy and paste the text here please.

Also include a new HJT log file.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your quick responce in this matter.

I have done, step by step, as you suggested. The redirect issue still seems to be there.

Here is the hosts file

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Part 2

I noticed that Messenger Stopper was a running process even after I uninstalled it, however it did not come back after a reboot.

Also, I don't know if this is an unrelated problem or not but for some reason all of the icons are gone from the task bar (McAfee, Dachshund Integrator, Volume Control). Figured I should mention that as well.

Thank you again for taking your time to help.

I forgot to ask this last post, what search engine are you getting re-directed to?

Lets look a bit deeper into the system.

Please generate a start up list with HJT:
Open HJT, click the 'None of the above, just start the program' button.
  • Then click the 'Config' button in the lower right hand of the program.
  • Then select the 'Misc Tools' button.
  • In the upper left hand side of the program tick the two boxes 'List also minor sections (full)' button and the 'List empty sections (complete)' button and select 'Yes' when promted by the dialog box.
The resultant scan will produce a notepad log file, please paste that log file back here for me to review.

And lets get an uninstall list from HJT.

Open HJT, click the 'None of the above, just start the program' button.
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Then click on the Save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
  • When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that notepad back into this thread for me to view.

Originally it was going to a comcast.net search engine. After the first set of changes I did now it goes to an "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage" error screen

Start up list:

Ok, a re-direct to your ISP isn't really a threat in so much as them trying to get you buy stuff from thier adverts.

Fix these two lines with HJT:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.comcast.net/toolbar2.0/search/

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.comcast.net/toolbar2.0/search/

You should then be able to set your search engine to whatever you like.

I can't imagine why you would not be able to access any of those sites mentioned in your first post tho.

I would suggest installing the Google toolbar and using Google as your default engine. Once installed check those sites to see if you can view them.
