XP Running Slow

I am running XP Pro on my laptop and it has started running slow. It takes three and a half minutes to start up, use to take just over a minute. If I click on start and put the mouse over all programs it takes 20 seconds before you see the programs, it used to be instant, if you move the mouse over the programs it is jerky and slow to respond.
Sometimes when I start a program it will sit there for up to a minute with no apparant activity before the program starts.
I have run all the antivirus programs Spybot, Ad-Aware etc but they don't find anything.
I have just run Hijack this and will post the log here.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2

Have you cleaned out all temp folders?

C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content. Then open the Java Plug-in, click the cache tab and then clear. This will only apply if you have installed Sun Java.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.

Incidentally, did this slowdown start after installing the MS Antispyware beta? I noticed a significant lag in startup time after installation.

Noticed any excessive cpu usage?

I have done all that you suggest Dave but system is still slow. It was slow before I installed MS Antispyware beta. I can't see any excessive Cpu usage, it normaly shows 1% usage when idle.

Paul

Right click on My Computer icon > Manage > Services & Applications > Services.

Scroll down the list to NVIDIA Driver Helper Service - NVIDIA Corporation (assuming it is in the list) - double click on the entry and in the dialogue box which appears select 'Disabled' in the Startup Type drop down list. To see what depends on the service hit the Dependencies tab.

If something doesn't work set it back to the original setting - Automatic or Manual.

Don't see anything in your log that would suggest a problem. Have you done an online virus scan? Defrag? Maybe open the case and blow it out with compressed air? Disable startup items to see if one might be causing the problem? Update drivers?

I have done a online virus scan and defrag. Getting this laptop case open does not seem easy so I will leave that one. How do I disable startup items to see if one of them is causing the problem? ..........Paul

Use either msconfig (Start > Run > msconfig) or , maybe more convenient through Startup Control Panel
