Welcome - Updated 06.18.07

If you need assistance removing malware/spyware/hijackers

1. We ask that you first use a free online virus scan. See post #2 below.

2. Scan with an anti-spyware program, preferably both Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE Personal.
Instructions and download links are in the posts below.

3. HijackThis
Please dont just post a hijackthis log. It's helpful for us to know what's going on, in as much detail as possible. Mention all the problems, not just those that seem related to a hijack/spyware/virus.
Also, tell us what programs you have used. Please include version # and when they were last updated.
Instructions are below

Thank You

Free online scans

BitDefender AntiVirus Free Scan, check all box's except [ ]auto clean !!,
then have it delete the file if it cannot clean/repair/cure it,
turn off any Popup Blockers before accessing the site:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

Panda ActiveScan-Free online scanner,
http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm

Computer Associates eTrust AV Web Scanner: http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor...info/scan.aspx
It takes while for the active X install and the download to finish.
So Wait until its says succeeded for all files, you might have to hit refresh if it reports a failed. select all drives scan, Try to cure/repair, if it cannot choose delete!

If there are any problems, copy the reports back here please.

Scan with both Spybot and Ad-Aware

Tutorial
Scanning in Spybot Search and Destroy:

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings
(Please ensure you have versin 1.4 final.)
Home - The home of Spybot-S&D!: http://www.safer-networking.org/
Note:if you are installing it for the first time or are infected with a hijacker do not choose to use resident aka tea timer.
It is not install unless you place a check next to it during the installation.

2. Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

3. Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Even if you just installed it !!!

4. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

5. Next click the button "Check for Problems"

6. When Spybot is complete, fix everything found marked in red.

7. Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

8. REBOOT
The Import thing with SpyBot for new users is to not change the settings untill you read more about them.

HijackThis

The current version is 1.99.1 (released 2/16/2005) [by merijn bellekom]

Most of what it lists will be harmless, even essential,
DON'T fix anything yet please.

HijackThis! installation is as follows:
Download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

Note: Regarding the new TrendMicro HijackThis! 2.0 Beta:
Quote:
We in the forums prefer at this time not to use it, until they have ironed out all the wrinkles, so would you please download the older version, 1.99.1 and run a new log.

Then in your post simply right click and in the context menu choose paste.
More Information here http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/#copyandpaste

If you've used it before please don't have anything excluded.

Start a new topic in on of our security areas and someone will be glad to help.

Do not run any tools which you think may be required for your machine. Some of these tools need to be used in a specific order and on specific infections. By using them you could do more harm than good. Only perform the scans as described above and nothing further.

All tools used for malware cleaning\removal have been tested ad nauseum. That does not however mean some machine may not encounter problems. The makers of many of these specialized tools are not professionals in the sense that that are not corporations, just code these security tools as a hobby. All users who download specialized tools do so at their own risk and we, at WindowsBBS cannot and will not be held liable for any damage done. We will however do all we can to fix any problems which do arise as a result of tools which we ask of you to use.
