    [Inactive] Windows 7 PC Keeps Locking Up

    Hello,

    My PC, that is running Windows 7, has become very unstable starting last night. Here is a history of what has happened in the past 24 hours.

    I was using the PC yesterday when the mouse and keyboard went dead. I initially thought it was due to dead batteries in my wireless mouse (but that was not the case). I had to do a hard reboot to get the PC working. Since that time, the PC has locked up consistently after 5-10 minutes of use. After each crash I would do a hard reboot, boot up in Safe Mode, restart, then log in. Like clock work the mouse and keyboard would go dead after a short while. It seems it would happen whenever I was pointing at the task bar, but I could be wrong.

    In another forum someone pointed out that I had Windows Defender active and that this could be conflicting with my AV software (Fprot) or malware software (Malwarebytes). I do not recall having Defender turned on, but there was a recent MS patch about Defender and maybe that turned it on.

    I turned Defender off and disabled the service - still have the same problem.

    I also ran into an error message with my Nvidia driver. I checked and I was using an outdated driver. I downloaded the latest version of the driver from Nvidia, but the problem came back. I tried running StartUp (?) Repair, and it did a System Restore (which rolled back the Nvidia driver). Still have the problem. Now I wonder if I am infected with something.

    The PC sits behind a Netscreen hardware firewall, I have Windows Firewall on (your Step #1), I use Malwarebytes, SpyBot and Fprot, SpyBot is not updated or run automatically like the other two. I also regularly use CCleaner and TFC to get rid of temp files.

    Following are the log files you requested.

    GMER found no changes or problems

    Hi,

    I have run GMER (using the recommended random name) 6 different times. I ran it in Safe Mode, Ran it with Windows booted normally, and ran it as an Administrator. Each time it scans for a while then says it cannot detect any changes. I have tried Saving and Copying - no matter what I do the log files come out blank!!:confused:

    I am hoping the repeated scans with no results is enough.

    *** EDIT: I should also point out that the Devices tab was grayed out in all cases and was never checked.

    Please, observe following rules:
    • Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
    • If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
    • Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those I suggest.
    • Never run more than one scan at a time.
    • Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
    • The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
    • If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
    • I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

    ===========================================================

    So far I don't see much.

    Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

    **Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    • Never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

    • NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
      NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
    **Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
    **Note 2 for AVG and CA Internet Security users: ComboFix will not run until AVG/CA Internet Security is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG/CA Internet Security "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results ". Since AVG/CA Internet Security cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG/CA Internet Security first.
    Use AppRemover to uninstall it: http://www.appremover.com/
    We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
    **Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion ", restart computer to fix the issue.
    **Note 4: Some infections may take some significant time to be cured. As long as your computer clock is running Combofix is still working. Be patient.

    Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    NOTE.
    If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:

    1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode.

    2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to your_name.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
    Do NOT run it yet.
    Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
    There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
    Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
    You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

    * Rkill.com
    * Rkill.scr
    * Rkill.exe
    • Double-click on the Rkill icon to run the tool.
    • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
    • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
    • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
    • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
    • Do not reboot until instructed.
    • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
    Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.

    If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.

    In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.

    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Broni, just looked in and I wondered whether Mr. Chip has a large enough PSU?
    220W seems a bit small to me. Neil.

    That would be a subject to a different forum.
    We have to establish if his computer is clean first.

    retired learner -
    You make a very interesting point. I have learned the hard way never to buy a mini desktop again! The PC is very limited in options. Still, it is only 18 months old so I am stuck with it for a bit. Acer listed about a half dozen graphics cards you could use to upgrade from the onboard graphics. I picked this one as it is on their approved list. I would love to have a 300-350W power supply in the PC - but I couldn't find one that would fit the case.

    The on board graphics had a hard time with my large display when I was editing RAW picture files that are 35MB in size each. I am open to suggestions about the PS. I have been using the computer for 18 months w/o this problem, if that helps.

    Nah, nothing there.
    I suggest you start new topic in Windows forum.

    Clarification

    Hi Broni,

    I want to make sure I understand you correctly. Are you saying my PC is fine and is not infected?

    On the one hand that is good news - on the other I wonder what is going on. Do you have any suggestions before I switch back to the Windows 7 forum?

    In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
    Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
    You'll get more attention.

    OK - thanks again for looking - is there some way to flag the thread as "resolved" as opposed to inactive? Just a thought... Have a nice day!
