    [Resolved] "Your PC Protector" Infection

    This infection popped up on my wife's computer a couple of hours ago while she was in a genealogy website. AVG identified a threat and when I elected to move it to the virus vault, AVG froze for a while and then the AVG tray icon disappeared.

    The "Your PC Protector" now pops up constantly. I can close it out with Task Manager but it reappears within a few seconds. All links to AVG, Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, and other similar malware scanners have been cut off. I tried rebooting but immediately get the pop up again. I am now in Safe Mode and tried to install a new Malwarebytes but it wouldn't complete the installation. I was able to get Superantispyware to open up and now have it running. As soon as it finishes, I will post the results and try to get a dds scan. Should I try to reboot to run the dds or is it OK to run it while in Safe mode?

    As an aside, Wildfire has been helping me with this computer for the past few days on what we though was a possible heat related problem. I would insert the link here but I don't know how - it is Hardware, Subject: Monitors Flashing On and Off. Don't know if there is any connection between that thread and the problem that just occurred but thought I would mention it.

    I have posted the DDS logs below. After the SuperAntispyware scan completed, the pop up has gone away and the computer seems somewhat normal but I can't get to "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. I was curious to see if the Your PC Protector was listed in installed programs.

    Hi. First of all you should uninstall all java versions older than the current one, which is 018, I believe.

    ==

    Download the HostsXpert.
    Run it and press "Restore M$ Hosts File" and press "OK ". Exit Program.
    Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it.

    See if you can get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware now. If still no go, try the following;

    Download Delete Domains from here and run it. It will delete all entries from the trusted and restricted zone.

    It's looking better. Things seem to be getting back to normal. I ran Malwarebytes and the log is below. I can now access the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel so I was able to remove the older Java stuff.

    I didn't run the HostXpert yet. The link took me to something called "Funkytoad ". I looked on the web and found downloads at Snapfiles and MajorGeeks. I started to go ahead and download one of those but I thought I would check with you first.

    I fixed the link for hostsxpert now. Funkytoad is the correct site :).

    Download HijackThis Executable from here. Save it to your desktop.
    Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and then go to the format Tab and make sure that wordwrap is unchecked. Copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

    Crunchie,

    I got the Hostsxpert thing take care of. The HiJackThis log is posted below. I got to thinking last evening that I had, for reasons I can't recall, unchecked my F drive on the Malwarebytes scan. I have a 1TB external hard drive that has several images and data backups of this (my wife's computer) and my computer. I did just run Malwarebytes scan but it found no problems. However, the scan only took about 15 minutes - makes me wonder if it scanned everything.

    Crunchie,

    This post is about 12:30pm EST on Monday, Feb 8.

    Just started encountering the pop up problems again. If we try to close them out, we sometimes get a freeze that forces us to manually close the computer. This is essentially the same problem I referenced in the intial post that Wildfire had been helping us work on last week. Also, we have, in some cases, been able to stop the popups via Task Manager prior to trying to close them ourselves.

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

    O9 - Extra button: MUSICMATCH MX Web Player - {d81ca86b-ef63-42af-bee3-4502d9a03c2d} - http://wwws.musicmatch.com/mmz/openWebRadio.html (file missing)

    O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {bc2b1d7d-4c1a-4f01-8142-de1a6571216a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mst122.dll

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked ".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mst122.dll

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
    Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
    • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
    • Physically disconnect from the internet.
    • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
    • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

    Note:
    Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

    Run Combofix ONCE only!!

    Crunchie,

    On a restart today I got an Error RunDLL. Said there was an error loading c:\windows\system32\vevesadi.dll.

    I think I got the tasks from your previous post done except for the file delection. Couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mst122.dll. I did go to Folder View to make sure I could see hidden files.

    I should point out that toward the end of the ComboFix run, the computer appeared to be going through a reboot but it never came back on it's own. The monitors were black but the green light on the front stayed on but I didn't see an HD activity. I waited about 10 minutes and manually shut down and then restarted later. When it came back up, Combofix opened up and said it was generating the log - and did so.

    Please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have these files scanned. Post the results back here.

    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\demibigi.dll
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\zekuboli.dll

    ===========

    Let me know if you have had the dll error message on any subsequent restarts.

    Crunchie,

    I just turned the computer on and it booted up fine with no hitches or error messages. I can't find the two files you asked me to scan:

    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\demibigi.dll
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\zekuboli.dll

    After I used the Jotti's browse, I opened Windows Explorer and searched but couldn't find them. I checked to make sure I could see hidden folders.

    Ok. I am off to bed now, so if you get this online scan done, I will check the results when I get up.

    Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    It's best to disable real time protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the scan.

    Check this link for any applicable programs you may have (check under How to Temporarily Disable your Anti-virus).

    Click on Accept If your pop –up blocker blocks any windows from opening.

    Click Run on the window that opens.

    Windows Vista users you must open the web browser using the Run as Administrator command - accessible from the right-click menu from the browser shortcut.

    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
    • When completed, under Scan on the left side, click on My Computer.
    • This will start the scan of your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Click Report on the left side.
      • Click the Save Report button, and in the Save dialog box, type a name for the scan report file that you want to create and select its type as Text file. Click OK to save the file.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

    Please post the Kaspersky results.

    Crunchie,

    I started the Kapersky scan and it ran for 3 hours and only got to 2%. The second monitor started flashing on and off intermittently and I couldn't open any other programs/windows. I closed out Kaspersky via Task Manager and rebooted and started Kaspersky again and also opened mail and another browser.

    This time, Kaspersky has been running 4 hours and is now up to 5%. I have used Kaspersky several times before and it usually finishes in less that 2 hours. Should I continue to let it run? We are able to use the other applications OK.

    Crunchie,

    I guess I was a bit impatient. The scan finally finished and the results are posted below. The final scan took 7&1/2 hours to run. From the results, it appears the problems are in my external hard drive.

    Looks like there are some infected files on your backup drive, all of them in the email backup.
    If there is nothing there of value, I suggest deleting those emails.
    Post back and let me know how things are.

    Crunchie,

    I deleted the files from the external hard drive. I have been monitoring things for the past couple of days and all seems to be well from a malware standpoint. Once again, my thanks to you for all your time and attention. You are keeping my computers operational. I would assume that you could go ahead and mark this one resolved.

    We are still experiencing a problem with a freeze situation but I feel pretty certain that is related to the heat problem that Wildfire and I were pursuing in the Hardware Forum before the malware problem popped up. I will head back to Hardware and see if I can get it worked out there.

    No worries. Glad I could help :).

    Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

      ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.
