    Hi,
I have a pentium3 800mhz running win98se. I was trying several ftp programs and after removing them with norton uninstall deluxe (older version)
I now cannot get windows to work. I have tried reinstalling windows with no improvement.
In the dialog box details it mentioned the problem is caused by msgsvr32 and devcon32 .dll.
Is there any hope as I need the data.

How do I start in safe mode?
    Thanks
    Lewis

Would you confirm the spelling of msgsvr32....

msgsrv32.exe is a genuine Windows file

msgsvr32.exe is connected with a worm.

Note the difference SRV vs SVR.

Need to clear up this point first.
In what way - what exactly happens?

    To boot into Safe Mode
Same for 98 as I recall.

    Hi PeteC,
    Thanks. Correct spelling is MSGSRV32.

I now cannot get windows to work.

Windows starts to load but then I get the message it has performed an illegal whatever and will now close. The 2 files I mentioned are mentioned in the details.

    Thanks again.

Well at least you do not have the worm, which has to be a plus :)
It sounds rather like the install failed - how did you do it?

BTW - I would be confident that your data is safe, but if the Windows problem cannot be readily resolved your only option will be to hitch the drive as slave into another computer and copy it off.

    Hi PeteC,
    Thanks again.
I just ran setup from the floppy.

I am now usuig a different hard drive on the same computer and I have tried booting with both HD's connected, the dodgy one as slave but it fails to boot.
Can I connect the (dodgy drive) after I boot the working drive?

No - it won't be recognised AFAIK and you may well blow something.

Does the other drive alone boot up? I assume you have installed W98 on it?

If you connect the second drive as slave and boot you say that the boot fails - any error messages or just no action?

    new info

    Hi,
I tried booting the dodgy drive and I am getting the message that I don't have a valid fat or fat 32 partition and when I tried to fdisk there was no reaction.
I am going to try booting both drives again.

    Data rescued

    Hi,
Just to let you know I was able to burn most data onto CD's.
So I will be formatting the hard drive and starting again.
    Thanks
    Lewis
