    Hello Shammie,

    Not familiar with Cox.

One suggestion is to search for Symantec/Norton references via the Search, look for files/folders in case NIS wasn't deleted properly.

Another search is for Symantec references in the Registry, use regedit > Edit > find.

EDIT: Forgot to specify regedit execution Start > run > type regedit > ok

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Shammie,

Here is what I would do based on the info you've given:

If you have System Restore enabled, go back to a point prior to uninstalls of the programs you've listed, this would be prior to the Cox install of course as well.

Then making sure that none of the resident processes of these are running - adaware's Ad Watch, spybot's immunize or teatimer, or spywareblaster's Browser add-on (if you have trouble with disabling completely, forum here http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php? f=23 ) install/uninstall these programs one by one - with reboots between each step.

If you don't have System Restore enabled, go thru these steps anyway.

You can also try not uninstalling with the exception of NIS - that's got to go. But, make sure none of the programs have their background processes running or running at all and then try installing Cox.

    Regards - Charles

I have Cox Security installed. Haven't had problems like you describe. Lucky I suppose. Hopefully one of the above Posts will get you through your problem.

One thing I can assure you of, is no other Anti-Virus Program with the exception of AVG and another I have forgotten will run with COX. If you have Norton or McAfee plus most of the others available, Cox will not run. Same on the Firewall. That includes the built-in Microsoft. It will have to be turned off.
Any other firewall will have to be uninstalled, just COX if that is what you want.

Will say that the software from COX is first class in my opinion. I've gotten Virus updates on Sat and Sun most weeks. I believe they are on the ball with this.

For those that are not familiar with the COX Security Program, it includes Anti-Virus, Firewall,Spy ware Check and Removal, and Parental Control. All this is free of charge for Cox users. You are allowed to turn on/off any of the programs.

Have you tried a Systems File Check? If not, that might help you get the proper files back.

You may know, but RUN then "sfc /scannow" will get missing and/or corrupt file back in good order. Surely ti won't hurt to try that.

Other than a Repair on Windows I don't know. Maybe some of the more experienced Problem Solvers will give you guidance.

    Good luck.

    Hi Mudd,

FYI, sfc /scannow is for XP - not available on 9X OSes.

    Hi Shammie,

Did fixing the rundll32 error solve the Cox install problem?

My bet is that this is one of the many "free" security suites based on a combination of Zone Alarm Free, with a free antivirus (Ez Antivirus for example).
This particular combination is known for conflicts which often are only resolveable by doing a clean install of the OS and then installing them before you install any of your other software.
IMHO norton , while a resource hog, is an excellent product. I have no problem with it using all available resources that it thinks it needs when it is doing its job (scanning a file, blocking a virus etc). I would rather have it do that than get a virus.

Note that Windows ME does not include a system file checker. Instead it uses system file protection in conjunction with system restore. If a system file is changed, it is backed up in a restore point. It is presumed that you will not need to do a system file check .

    Hi Shammie,

Went looking around for info on this security suite, kind of slim.

The following may be what you're experiencing:

    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,13152016~start=60
W/O looking over your shoulders, pretty hard to tell exactly what's going on.

A positive review with some caveats:
    http://www.tlcug-ark.org/reviews/coxsecsuite.html

FWIW: I do not like suites, security suites especially - they are only as good as the weakest part. I understand that's the marketing rage and the average user likes them because they have less decisions to make.

The way I run is the best possible AV and the best possible firewall, and any other security app should be added to that mix on it's own.

One more issue: your OS - WinME, software developers sooner or later do not want to bother optimizing software for older OSes. I'm not saying that is the case here, but it could be a factor.

    Regards - Charles

    Charles,

Thank you for all your help. I'm trying to install this for my parents, I use norton internet security. Cox is free for their users, but I guess they really don't care if it works or not, they have assured my that a tech would call me and work thru this. That was Thursday morn. now Sat. 5 calls by me and still waiting for a call from the tech. All that they have helped with so far is telling me to upgrade memory $80.00 later still no security. Are there still any good freeware antivirus, firewall's?
    Thanks again,
    shammie

    Hi Shammie,

Look in the General Security section here. There is a thread on AVG - free AV. The most widspread free firewall is Zone Alarm. You'll see threads on Zone Alarm's new versions, those are about the paid versions. The free version of v6.0 is problem free as far as I know.

You might also start a thread asking opinions.

    Regards - Charles
