    Using W98se
IE, Outlook and all other Windows programs can no longer connect to the internet, but if I open a dos window I can successfully ping internet addresses.

When I open Network neighborhood the computer name shows, but none of the drives show.

I tried a reinstall in place, but no help. :(

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Check the settings in your internet connection (for dialup, Control Panel>Internet Option>Connections tab; for broadband, right click on Network Neighborhood, left click on Properties, double click on the TCP/IP entry that's followed by the name of the network card) to make sure they're still correct.

Then check in Device Manager to see if there's a yellow warning "splat" next to whatever you use to connect (modem on network card). If so, reinstall the drivers for that device.

If that doesn't help, the next thing I'd try is LSPFix. Download it and take it to the problem computer (it'll fit on a floppy) and run it. It's free, running it won't hurt and might help.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry it took me so long to acknowledge but I was in the hospital :( .

I never got the chance to try your suggestion as my friend's kid was very impatient to get back on AIM and used the Gateway system restore disk while I was laid up.

    Do you have a firewall?

Have you checked your hosts file (C:\Windows\Hosts
no file extension , not hosts.sam select , right click and choose open with notepad, make sure always use is not checked. If there is a bunch of stuff there, copy it and post here.)

    I hope you're feeling better
Just to clarify, is the problem solved?

Another poster suggested LSP fix, but you would need to know exactly which file is breaking your Internet access in order to use that program, if that is even the case.
At the bottom of that same page is a link to a utility called Winsock2fix for fixing winsock issues in accordanance to your operating system
