How do you stop USB device?

It is recommended that a USB flash drive be stopped before removal when the computer is running. In XP there is an icon in the sys tray for this but I can't find anything in 98.

When you have finished copying, do not immediately remove the flash drive from the USB port. Instead, drag the white USB drive icon to the Trash Can, located on the Dock. Note: the Trash Can will change to the Eject Icon.

The white USB drive icon will no longer be visible on your desktop. It is now safe to remove the flash drive from the USB port

It is recommended that a USB flash drive be stopped before removal when the computer is running.
No need to do that if you're going to re-use the flash drive, which I think will be the case, can't think of why you would use it just once. When pulled out, the drive letter doesn't show up in My Computer, when inserted again for another copy or download, it'll show up in My Computer under the same drive letter assigned to it the first time the system installed it.

If you're going to add another device to the system, in order for this new device not to take the Drive Letter assigned to the flash drive, stick the flash drive in.

The reason they tell you to "stop" the USB drive is that if you remove it too quickly after copying something to it, the drive might not have completed its operation of copying the file and thus will corrupt the file since it might not have completely copied before you removed it.

Thanks for your explanation. I suspect the other reason for the advice is the potential for drive lettering complications, to which I alluded to in my post.

BTW, HD's connected via USB are also handled this way. In my case, the USB HD is a backup drive and most of the time off. Doesn't show up in My Computer when it is off.
