    Hi

I am new to this, so please help.

I run windows 98SE and by mistake I deleted WINDOWS NOTEPAD, how can I reinstall it without doing a complete reinstall?

My computer is made by Time Computers, they do not supply Windows reinstall CD's and to reinstall a copy of windows is on the hidden on the hard drive hard.

I hope I have explained this ok.

    Many thanks

    Jimmer.

JIMMER --Are you sure you deleted Notepad, itself, or just the shortcut to it?
Do a Find for notepad.exe in your C:\ drive. Did you find it? If yes, just right click and create a shortcut. If you click on that you will again have notepad.
However if you do not find it, you should be able to restore notepad.exe from the .cab files on your PC.
    Follow the directions here
    http://users.erols.com/dj-paulen/ss/
When you are asked from where you want to restore the file, the answer, since Time Computers did not give you a CD, should be C:\Windows\Options\Cabs (assuming your main drive is C:\).
    Good luck.

    Hi Welshjim

Many thanks, its not just the shortcut thats missing, I tried SFC to no avail,
all I get is check correct restore location.

It looks as if I will have to bite the bullet and do a complete restore. Oh Dear

Going for a coffee back later if you have any further advice.

    Regards

    Jim

If you'd like, I can email you a copy of the file. Send me a PM or email me to let me know.

Edit: Oops, got this posted before I checked WelshJim's link so this is all rather redundant.

There is a way to extract a single file from the Windows CD and extract it to a specific location.

    Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>Tools>System File Checker.

Tell it you want to extract notepad.exe, to extract it from either your Win98 CD or C:\Windows\Options\Cabs and to to extract it to C:\Windows (or anyplace else you want it). C:\Windows is the default location and should be where the shortcuts you have now are pointing.

If you have the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder (most do), it's faster than extracting from a CD.

    Notepad has only 5 files.
    2 in C:\Windows:
    - notepad.exe
    - notepad. ico
    and 3 files in C:\Windows\Help:
    - notepad.cnt
    - notepad.hlp
    - notepad.chm
See what files you have, which you don't, and I can mail you missing files. No installation here is needed. Just replacing missing files.

Jimmer, Notepad is very limited anyway. Editpad Lite is much better, and free...get it here.
