Im am having a problem with my computer which causes the mouse and keyboard to lock up at a randome time during my session on my computer. Ive heard that there is a windows update that i could download to help with this problem but i cannot seem to find it. This problem is not caused by spyware for i have been keeping track of that with an ad-aware program. It is also not caused by a virus because i often scan my computer with norton antivirus without any notification of any virus. When my mouse and keyboard go into this lock up the computer still runs only without use of eather. The only way to get rid of this problem teporaraly is to reboot my computer at the base unit. this problem happenes at start up and other times also. Can i have some assistance.

    Hi Chris11224
    Welcome to the boards!
Do you know how much ram you are running? My guess, if you're running windows ME, is that you may very well be running out of resources.
    Go to run...then type: msconfig
Click on the start up Tab...and list for us, everything you've got a check mark beside.

Sure...I could play hit and miss with you all day. :D
    Change the keyboard and mouse?
What are you resources at, after a fresh boot?
Do a ctrl/alt/del, after a fresh boot...what's listed in the close programs dialogue box?
Opened up your case lately and blown it out?
When did this start happening? Have you tried using a system restore date to a time before this began?
    Perhaps a heat issue........

You've listed your experience as a begginer. It's really all I had to go on.

I just rebooted and it says 86% of my systems resources are free. I have the mouse that the computer first came with but i have an old keyboard from a older computer that we barely use. The key board that this computer came with came to a tragic death involving a full bottle of gatorade, whops. Well i do not think that the problem has to do with anything involving the mouse/keyboard being too cloged by dirt to function. When the problem occurres both the mouse and the keyboard fail at the same time with a short duration of "lag" afterwards leaving the computer runing the programs it has been but without the ability to move the mouse or type. (EX: If i was playing music on my winamp it would still be playing but the mouse/keyboard are gone) I do not remember when this started happening, sometime this year. I gess it could have helped if i knew. I do not know of any heat problems, if you could give me some things to check out i could determine if it relates to heat. This problem is very randome, It could quit while im talking on the internet, playing a game or even before windows loads. While windows is loading the scan disk comes up, because i have just rebooted the computer improporly when i got stuck because of the mouse and keyboard, they sometimes lock up there. I have also checked the conection between the units and the back of the computer also, No luck.

A lag usually suggests resources, or as I've mentioned.....heat.
Take the side off. Look inside. Lots of dust in there? How warm is it? Are all the fans running? Where do you have your tower stored?
Get a house fan and point it inside your opened case and run your computer. Does it make a difference?

Well here is the story, i opened the case and there was some dust but no overheating problems nor to much dust we sucked out the dust and we put it back together. My father has heard that the problem that were experiencing has to do with the operating system and that many other people that have it do not like it for problems such as this. we have also heard that there is downloadable upgrade that can fix problems such as these, does anyone know of and to help me. I am aware of the programs that are runing at start up and it is not causing the system to lag.

Perhaps it's windows updates that you're looking for?

 Oh My! That's all. Just  Oh My!

Well, Chris11224, I do wish you the very best in your endeavors to get this one solved. It sounds like you've got plenty of great advice so far....and if nothing else... will soon find you in a store buying a new computer.
But that's good too, as it's all one huge learning experience isn't it? :D

The problem there is that you were asked 3 times for some very basic information, not without reason, and rather than provide that, proceeded to inform Daizy that is not your problem. You may be right, but I guess we may never know.

Thanks Dave. It truly is hard to help, when answers aren't being provided.

Actually.....the  face was at the thought of someone sticking a vaccuum inside their computer case. :D

We did not just randomly stick the vacume in the computer we were overly careful in what we were touching and we did not risk the chance of causing other problems by blowing the dust further into the structures of the computer. I only mention that it does not have to do with the programs runing at start up because i only have 3 programs runing at start up, the system tray, norton anti-virus auto protection, and explorer. I now have over 90% of the reasorces free on my computer. With all due respect we still beleave that the problem lies in the operating system.

Properly tuned, ME can be a speedy, stable OS. The most common causes of slowdowns/freezes is viruses and spyware/malware/adware. Many of these nasties will often show themselves in the running processes, hence the reason for asking what you see there after rebooting. But lets go at this another way. Download both Spybot and Ad-aware from the links in my signature. Install, open and immediately update both programs. Run Spybot and fix all problems found that are prechecked. Configure Ad-aware for a custom full scan, run and delete everything it finds. Open My Computer, right click Local Disk C: and choose properties. Then click disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK. Reboot. Run scandisk and defrag. Reboot. Scan the PC with both RAV and Housecall.

Let us know if this helps.

I followed your instructions but it did not help the problem. Thank you for the anti-spyware program, i now have ad-aware, spybot and of coarse my anti-virus. I also run cleanup disk weekly along with these other programs. I know that these "nasties" run programs but i only have 3 programs runing and im positive that they are vital programs, hence the reason i said there was no problem there.

You bet! Necessities these days. :( OK, one more check for unwanted pests. Download HijackThis from the CWShredder link in my signature. Place it in a permanent folder(I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet!

    Reboot.

Enable viewing of hidden files and folders.
    Disable system restore.
Open C:\Program Files and delete any of the following folders if present.

    Toolbar
    BargainBuddy
    nCase
    eBates
    adp
    180Solutions
    WebRebates

Locate and delete each of the following files in bold, if present. Make VERY sure of the name before deleting.

    C:\Windows\bs2.dll
    C:\Windows\bs3.dll
    C:\Windows\bsx5.dll
    C:\Windows\bxxs5.dll
    C:\Windows\oo4.dll

    C:\Windows\system32\bs3.dll
    C:\Windows\system32\bsx5.dll

    C:\Windows\system32\bxxs5.dll
    C:\Windows\system32\oo4.dll
    C:\Windows\system32\rem00001.dll

If this were my machine, I would at the least go to start>control panel>internet options, click settings under the TIF section, then view objects, and delete anything damaged, corrupted or not installed. Personally, I would delete them all. They will be rebuilt as needed.

    Run disk cleanup again.

    Reboot.

Re-enable system restore and post a new HJT log, along with any comments. There will be further instructions.

The following entries may be fixed with HJT, or unchecked in msconfig, to prevent running at startup. **Optional**

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TaskMonitor] C:\WINDOWS\taskmon.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

BTW, I don't see where you did the online virus scans I recommended. I strongly urge you to do so.

Fis this also then uninstall it through addremove
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClockSync] C:\PROGRA~1\CLOCKS~1\Sync.exe /q

then delete it folder if still present
    these can go also
    C:\PROGRA~1\TOOLBAR
    C:\Program Files\WebRebates
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SearchBar.htm

once restarted surf a bit and run it again click fix, did it find anything ?
