Right click My Computer and select properties, then device manager tab. Look through the list for anything with a yellow exclamation mark.

I suggest you reload the modem drivers for a start - have you a driver CD for the modem?.

First of all put the modem CD into the PC - assuming you have one - and open the contents in Windows Explorer and look for a readme file or look at the manual for the modem and check the recommended way of installing the drivers.

Then go to Device Manager and remove the modem.

Reboot and follow the instructions from the manual/CD to install the modem.

    Then post back with progress.

    1 is other devices
    2 PCI card
3 Wave device for voice modem

I am going to stick my neck out here and say there is a possible IRQ conflict between something ( sound likely ) and the Modem.

Internal Modems are great for producing this conflict.

Does your sound card have a joystick or gameport on it? A way to check on this is look where your speakers plug in on the back of the computer, and there will be a rectangular connection there with a bunch of tiny holes alongside where the speakers/microphone plugs in.
If there is such a connection, look in Device Manager, double click the "Sound, video and game controllers ", and see if there is a 'Gameport Joystick' listed there.
Check for this even if you do use a USB joystick or gamepad.
