I really hope someone here can help me....

This isnt a major issue (I dont think) but there was a powers outage at my place, and my computer was off. But now, the system sounds do not work. I can play cds, mp3s etc etc. Even go and play the sound file samples, and I can hear them.

But when my computer starts up, I hear nothing, or if I empty my trash, I get a generic BEEP from the computer itself. I think I have cheched everything I know of, and everything is on and not muted. I was on the phone with dell for 2 hrs today, and nothing. No help. I am 100% sure its not a hardware problem.

Does anyone know if this problem, and how to fix it? Im about ready to do a system re-install, I am so frustrated.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

    Check the following

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia.

What is set under "Scheme" ? Change it to which ever one you want. OR more fun would be to assign your own amusing noises to events.

I have the same problem with a computer I just set up. When I saw the suggestion, I looked at Themes and saw it was blank. So I set it to Windows default, with no effect. What happens when I stroke a tone is that a very quiet static-like sound is produced. It's as if there is a component along the way with volume turned way down, but I can't find it. Yes, CDs play fine.
