Before you go that route, try the following:

    - start~run~cmd
    - chkdsk x: /r (and just replace the "x" with all your drive letters, one at a time). You'll need to reboot for it to do the system drive.
    - reboot and start~run~sfc /scannow
    - apply SP3

See if the above will help you out.

Also, you say you can't update to IE6 but don't mention exactly what happens. That might help to know.

    Post back, good or bad.

The reinstall is a last resort and is NOT a guarenteed fix for the problem.

    Hello NewT

After applying SP3 onto my Win2k Pro SP2 PC, still cannot upgrade from IE 5.o to IE 6.0, so finally I have to use I have to editor the registry and remove one of the key suggested by Microsoft Knowledge base, in order to cure my problem.

Anyway, have a nice weekend !
