I need your expertise. With Win2k SP3 my eventvwr indicates the following errors:

    System Log Error
7024: The Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) service terminated with service specific error 3221229584.

    Application Log Errors
4111: The MS DTC service is stopping.
4112: Could not start the MS DTC Transaction Manager.
4185: MS DTC Transaction Manager start failed. Loginit error 0x3ee.
MS DTC log file not found. After ensuring that all Resource Managers coordinated by MS DTC have no in-doubt transactions, please run msdtc "“resetlog to create the log file.

I ran "msdtc "“resetlogâ€, and eventvwr displayed Error 4135 with properties:
Failed to create/reset the MSDTC log file.

I found the MS Knowledge Base article Q205069 dealing with this problem and followed its instructions to add a Snap-in called Component Services to the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Expanding Component Services I was supposed to be able to select My Computer and click on Properties, then reset the Log However, I just get an empty Computer Folder icon and I cannot complete the instructions. My network has only one computer, a printer, an Ethernet modem and a router.

I noted that the file MSDTC.Log does exist in my folder C:\WINNT\system32\DTCLog\, but the file is empty.

I displayed the list of Services in Administrative Tools and noted that the Distributed Transaction Coordinator Service was not started, although it was listed as an "automatic" startup type. I attempted to start it, but a dialog box stated that Windows could not start the DTC on the Local Computer.

Do you have any suggestions how I might resolve this problem? I suspect that it is preventing me from downloading the "Flash" plug-in from the Macromedia site. This is the only program that I cannot download.

Thank you for your attention, Joe.

Thank you Newt for your comments. It never occurred to me that MS DTC was not needed since I did not know what its function was. I solved my problem by changing its "Start Type" from automatic to manual. The automatic setting probably occurred when I initially installed my router.

I will have to read MS's instructions more carefully.

    Joe.

JSF - been there, done that, got a drawer full of the tee shirts (reading - or rather not reading - directions).

    Glad it is OK now.
