How to I re-establish permitting cookies from a site?

I read an article recently that suggested limiting cookies on my computer by turning off automatic cookie handling, blocking third party cookies, and prompting for 1st party cookies. This has worked pretty well, because once I decide to allow or block a site's cookies, that is the last time I have to deal with that site.

However, it was inevitable that I would accidently block a site from accepting their cookies that I should have allowed. I know that I can re-establish that site by going to tools/privacy/sites and putting the site URL in there. But I was wondering if it might be cleaner to just go to wherever IE8 stores my prior selections of either to block or allow cookies. It obviously isn't the tools/privacy/sites list, because that doesn't show the many selections I've already made. Does anyone know where the selection list is kept, and if it is even accessible to edit?

If you go into Internet Options > Privacy > then hit the Sites button it will show a list of managed sites which you can then select to change the cookie blocking.

This you already know, but it seems to be the only way to do it. It does only list managed sites, it won't list sites who's url's have been blocked completely.

The only thing I can think of is "reset" IE to defaults - but that's pretty radical for this situation.

Interestingly, when IE8 prompts me as to whether I want to allow or block cookies, that works, but none of those sites appear as part of the Options > Privacy > Sites list.

I haven't been able to find an answer to this. Yesterday I blocked the cookies on a site and the address remains in the list. Must admit I am baffled by this and can't imagine why, in your case, that the list has dissapeared.

Try adding another site today, pick any site you like, copy the url into the "Address of Website" box and click on Block, it should immediately appear in the list box below. After a reboot or two see if it is still there.

I probably wasn't clear enough in my initial description of what I am doing. What you described in your second paragraph is one way of blocking cookies from a site.

Another way, which is what I've been using, is to go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Advanced, and then click on the box that says "Override Automatic Cookie Handling" and set the radio buttons for First Party Cookies to "Prompt" and for Third Party Cookies to "block."

When you do this, and you go to a site you have not been to since you made these settings, IE will put up a prompt box that asks you if you want to Block or Allow cookies from that site going forward. If you click "Block," you'll never see the prompt box again for that site, and it is my understanding that IE will block attempts by that site in the future to put cookies on your computer.

Even though these settings should block all third party cookies, I find that I get prompted occasionally not only for the site I am going to, but also for some third parties, which for which I click "Block. "

When you block using this method, the site you blocked does not show up in the list that you referred-to. My question is how to find the "other " list that is keeping track of sites I've blocked using this prompt method.

It is the location of that list of sites that I originally tried to find an answer for until I stumbled across the "Address of Website" box and thought I had found it.

It is most likley hidden away in the registry and I have not been able to find anything to suggest where it might be.

Sorry I can't be of much help on this one.

In IE8 you can find the blocked senders list here:

Read Mail(icon) > Tools > Message Rules > Blocked Senders List > Blocked Senders

That's odd, I have IE8, if I right click on that icon it gives me a list of menu's, no sign of Tools. And if I left click it goes to Outlook.

Anyway, it is the list of sites that have had "third party cookies" blocked, using the methods described in post 6 that we need an answer to.

I've not come across an answer to this but wonder if you deleted the Browsing history and uncheced all the boxes in the list so everything got cleaned out it would reset the prompt for selected sites. Or if you hit the reset button under Advanced tab in Internet Options. If this did reset the prompt you could then use the method I described which would give you a list to manage. You could even try putting the sites in question into that list so you can control the cookie blocking fom there.

Following your menu, on my computer the Read Mail icon opens outlook express and then following the rest of your instructions, it does get to a Blocked Senders list. And I found one entry there. But that is for blocked incoming email senders, and it does not show anything related to cookies, at least on mine.

That might work, but I suspect that if I did uncheck everything and clean out everthing, if it worked, it would also take out those decisions I'd already made on cookies for other sites, which means that going forward, I'd have to answer the prompts again for all the sites I had previously answered-to.

I'm pretty sure that I can re-establish the ability of a site to use cookies by using Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Sites and then just copying the URL into the list of "Allowed" site. I was just surmising that there might be an easier way to edit the list of those sites determined by answering the prompts. It seems that nobody yet is aware of that approach, and if it is in the registry, it is probably easy enough to use the Privacy > Sites list to get the job done.

    markmadras,

FWIW there is no right clicking in the steps I outlined.

I just start from the incoming message (Read Mail) page.
