Resolved IE8 will not open consistently

    IE8 on my wife's computer running XP will not work consistently. One day it will open and work fine the next day it will not open at all. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Any error messages displayed when IE refuses to open?

    If it refuses to open from the icon will it open from the Run command ? ....

    Start > Run > iexplore.exe > Enter

    When it refuses to open will it run without add-ons? ....

    Right click the desktop icon > IE (no add-ons).

    Have you tried a Reset of IE? .....

    Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - Reset

    This did not fix the problem. Three hours on the phone with Microsoft also did not fix the problem Any other ideas anyone?

    Is the machine turned off inbetween the goood and bad days or left on?

    Turned off every night with the shutdown procedure.

    Working with them again this morning. They mention a corrupted DLL. We have yet again uninstalled IE8 and i suspect next step is to revert to IE7. They are going to call me back again in a few minutes. I will update after this conversation is over.

    Microsoft, after working with them for a two day period, isolated the problem to our McAfee software. With McAfee uninstalled all the issues with IE8, Windows updates, Viking embroidery software and Silex technology software were resolved. The solution required a great deal of patience and many restarts of the computer, but everything works now, but McAfee which I tried to reinstall, but with that all the problems returns so I took it off again. Thus far no solutions from McAfee. Considering change to some free anti-virus anyone have a suggestion?

    MacAfee strikes again :)

    Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira - in that order IMO.
