My System

IE7 ends connection after following several links

When following links to research a subject, my connection ends and the message "Cannot access this webpage". Once that happens, I can't access the internet anymore. I have to close my computer completely, not just do a restart, before I can access the internet again. I do a lot of research so would like to know if this can be fixed.

This is a very unusual situation...One you reboot...if you go directly back to the same 3 or 4 web site does it happen again?

Are you getting any sort of error?

After reboot, I can usually get connected right away and can access the same websites. This problem doesn't happen when I go from website to website if I address the websites directly. It only happens when I follow links from one website to another. There is no warning, no error message, just the screen that says that webpage cannot be found and then I know if I want to continue on the internet, I have to shut down and start all over. Any thoughts??

Once you lose the ability to browse, open a command window and run ipconfig /all > c:\ip.txt and post the contents of the ip.txt file here.

Are you on a wireless connection by any chance and maybe a neighbor is turning on their micorwave or something that is killing your connection?

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I haven't done much deep link following. By that I mean this problem only happens after I follow a lot of link to link to link, etc. so haven't experienced it yet. I copied your suggestion so if I do get thrown off again, I'll know what to enter in the run command. I don't think I have a wireless connection. I have a netgear connection with a USB cable. No, I'm sure there's no microwave running in my home when I'm online. But I will check with the people upstairs the next time it happens.
Thanks so much for your input so far.

My connection dropped today and I ran the command you suggested:
ipconfig /all > c:\ip.txt
and a black window opened for about 2 seconds, no text and just disappeared. Does this suggest anything to you?

Nope

If that doesn't run, I'm out off idea's.

Did you double check the file c:\ip.txt?

Which OS?

Did you run from a Command Window? .....

Start > Run > cmd > Enter

No, I didn't use the "cmd" and then enter. After choosing Run, in the next window that says "Open", I just started directly with the ipconfig/ etc. Instead, in that space, should I type "cmd", then hit enter and then type the ipconfig text? Thanks for your patience, I'll try again tomorrow (or I should say, today).

To Arie: I tried choosing Run>Open and c"\ip.text but Windows said it couldn't find that file. My operating system is Windows XP on a HP Pavillion, AMD. Do you need all the other system details in that information window you provided? If so, I'll have to get back to you tomorrow. It's almost 2 am and you probably won't see this until tomorrow anyway. Let me know what else you need. Thanks so much, Arie

Yes - the command must be run from a Command Window.....

Start > Run > cmd > Enter

At the flashing cursor in the command window which opens type .....

ipconfig /all > c:\ip.txt > Enter

Just use Windows Explorer and browse your C:\ drive & see if you see the file ip.txt.

But yea, if you run ipconfig /all > c:\ip.txt from the run command and not from a command prompt, it won't work.

Finally, I ran the command you suggested and this is the response:
Windows IP Configuration

Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid

IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NETGEAR WG111 802.11g Wireless USB2.0 Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0F-B5-DD-6C-11

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

Does this help at all?
