Hi, my pc had the blue screen recently so i had to reinstall windows xp sp3, since then i cannot launch explorer, i get no msg, the box appears briefly, then disappears, my wireless internet shows it is connected and my laptop works fine so it must be the comp or the software i guess...any ideas...thanks in advance.

When you reinstalled XP did you also install the chipset and other drivers?
Hi, Thanks for your response, not a comp expert, only installed the disc that came with the computer that had xp on it, I do have others with drivers on, do i need to install them aswell?

Hi, just checked other disc that ran a system check that said that chipset and dricers are installed on this system...
We need a lot more information before we can begin to help you ....
We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you - at the very least we need to know the Make and Model No. of the computer. plus .....
What disks do you have?
Is the version of XP on the CD XP SP3?
How did you reinstall Windows? - Did you boot from the CD and make a clean install, a repair install or run Setup from within Windows?
Unless you have a Recovery disk rather than a ful copy of XP it is necessary to install the drivers, but I need an answer to the question above first.
My guess is that you have a faulty reinstall rather than a lack of drivers, although these are also needed. I would not expect Internet Explorer to fail to open as suggested by your first post. Even without drivers it should open IMO.
How do you connect to the Internet?

ok, it is a dell dimensions 4700 desk top computer, the discs that i have are
1. reinstallation cd for windows xp home edition including service pack 2
2.drivers and utility disc: dell dimension resource cd, contents driver devices, diagnostics and utilities and computer documentation.
3. drivers and utilities disc: for reinstalling v.9x (capable)/56k data/fax modem software for mw
They are the only ones i can find, i had to boot from the cd as that was the only option i had and it was a clean install.
I entered iexplore.exe, a box popped up on the screen as if it was trying to connect, then it disappeared again leaving me with just the desktop screen to look at, also my mccaffee appeared saying my computer is not fully protected but i cannot connect to do a scan, my connection does say it is working and the strength is good,
everytime i switch the comp on i have updates to install, is this because the install disc is 6 years old now?
I connect to the internet via a wireless adapter and a router (netgear), i have a laptop which also runs of this via wifi and this is working ok
Clearly there is problem with the installation - entering iexplore.exe in the Run command should open up Internet Explorer regardless of whether or not you are connected to the internet. I understand that Internet Explorer does not open - is this the case?
You posted that you were running XP SP3 - your install CD is SP2, but you indicated that you made a clean install with format so that should not be a problem - the version of XP currently on the computer is SP2? Unless, that is, that SP3 has not already been downloaded through Windows Updates.
It seems to me that you have an internet connection as you say ....

and presumably they install? Windows update does not use Internet Explorer unless initiated manually.
Try a reinstall of Internet Explorer as outlined here ....
If that fails to resolve the problem of Internet Explorer not opening I would try a Repair Install
If that fails to resolve the problem of Internet Explorer not opening I would start over with a clean install.
You can download SP3 from here rather than rely on Windows Update.....

Yes - SP3 includes all the updates and patches issued since SP2, but there have been many updates since SP3 was released and these will need to be installed through Updates.
Thanks for your help. i have reinstalled the xpsp2 disc which seems to have worked, it came up with 2 options for home edition on set up, 1 is the new one which has no sound and says i need a sound card cause media player does not work. The other is the old one so i think i have 2 versions now running...any ideas on how to get the sound card then i can delete the other one, thanks, chris

How many Windows directories have you - I suspect you made a second installation of Windows rather than formatting and making a clean install. From my notes the standard method of clean installing Windows when Windows is already installed is ....

To delete the partition press L – heed the warnings and DOUBLE CHECK before hitting L
To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C
Accept max size and press ENTER
To set up Windows XP on the selected item (Partition (New Raw)) press ENTER
Format the partition using the NTFS file system – preferred unless you want an install of Win 98 to access data on the drive/partition, if so choose FAT32.
Set up is formatting ……
When format is complete XP will install.
When complete install your antivirus and firewall before you even think of connecting to the Internet. Update the virus definitions immediately and then go to Windows Updates and download the Critical updates.
If you have ended up with 2 copies of Windows I would start over and follow the instructions above.
Having made the second instal of Windows did you load the drivers from the Driver CD - they will include the sound driver - your motherboard has integrated sound.
Look in Device Manager for any items flagged with a yellow ! - they will no doubt be driverless.
